LOL..........
"Even the baby came out spotless"

well in view of the "clean up tv"campaigns ...I suppose childbirth is a good place to start?

Bob
women must've been tough in those days...........I mean, a breech birth with no anaesthetics?

I remember the district nurse living locally to us in custom house,in a flat, above a hardware store....... maybe she did midwifery as well, ?

It all seemed a bit prettied up to me. Pretty, soft spoken midwives, very reasonable patients and doing the hokey cokey in the street. I think the characters playing the nuns should have been the midwives. Even the baby came out spotless.

the east india dock area was poor housing and dog rough and hundreds had compulsary orders placed on them as unfit..and by late 1960s was declared a slum area,

so the tv drama has been adapted is that any surprise it shouldnt be, as thats what producers do for a bit of drama......and I bet most have forgotten the smog and fog that bathed London even into the early 1970s thats why boroughs declared no smoke areas and insisted the use smokeless fuel...

All mine went outside in the pram or front garden by the open front door whist I did my housework, even my youngest born 1992, would happily sit watching the world go by, old dears would stop for a chat and she would babble back her brown curls bouncing 10 to the dozen on her head...awww happy days..

I still haven't watched it but I am surprised at the several people who have said it wasn't like depicted. I assume they have stuck to the book and I thought the book was a true story, not fiction by Jennifer Worth. How strange.

Merlin Report 16 Jan 2012 13:56

I watched it with my friend Sasha,The smog was thicker and dirtier than shown and the midwifery was nothing at all like it was shown on there, ( She should know because she was one of "Charlottes Harlots" as they were known),the Eastend was part of her patch. some of the places she had to go to were not all that clean, but a lot of them even though money was short, were too houseproud to let their homes degenerate as was shown.**M**.

Just watched it on iplayer and having not read the books .thoroughly enjoyed it...

I am no expert on the midwifery of the times nor was I around in the 1950s so I'm happy with any poetic license displayed and enjoy it for the stories.

I would not say I "enjoyed" it but it certaiinly brought back memories !

I trained as a midwife in 1950,6 months at Queen Charlottes and 6 months on the district covering Islington and the Kings Cross area.

We lived in a house near the Angel Islington

It was a very poor area and had been badly bombed, rationing was still in place but I do not remember it resembling anything like that depicted for the London Docks.

Lovely generous people, you could go out on call at night on your own with no fears

Ah well :-)

I liked it. As i lived in the east end in the 70's and it was still bit like that even then. The flats we lived in were built 1847 and falling down while we were in there, we were on the 4th floor.the railing were half hanging off so had to walk along the wall side. We had rats as big as cats running around. You wouldnt have thought it in the 70's would you.

Part of it was also recorded in Mill Hill north London in the former Jesuit Seminary. I use to live in Mill Hill(i have lived in many places) as well and just cant place it,i must google it late.

Have to see how rest of the weeks are,as some of these promgrams start off good then end not so good.

Bearing down seems to be the in thing on TV at present. The pregnant abdomens are very realistic, though.

I enjoyed it, despite the slow start.

Late fil was born after a string of still births, and they wrapped him in newspaper, and either (from distant memory), put him under the bed, or on the wash stand, before discovering that he was alive.

My birth mother was a midwife in Basildon in the 1950's- 60's. She tells me of taking coal for one patient.
