all this about passive smoking, what about the fumes from cars and lorries that we all breathe in daily, dont you think thats harming you(but of course it would be silly to ban driving wouldnt it) in the grounds of my local hos, staff are not even allowed to smoke in there own cars during breaks, the staff carpark is a quarter of a mile from the main hos,its mad.
(i brought this subject up last month, the welsh senedd are trying to get a smoking in car ban inforced in wales in the next few yrs)

I think the main reason for this is to protect the health of children from passive smoking. I grew up with heavy smoking around me and hated it and suffered serious chest infections as I got older. My sister missed a lot of school due to bronchitis. Both parents deaths were smoking related. Yes, I would ban it anywhere there are children present.

Adults can choose how they ruin their own health........but if they want children, they should be made to behave responsibly with their childrens' health. Children have no say in these things themselves, similarly with what diet they are fed.

Yes I would stop drinking in public places too and slap more tax on cheap drink and on junk food.

By doing all these things we hopefully would all have a healthier start in life and save the NHS a lot of money.

Edit: same as you Janet, one parent died age 78 but siblings lived into mid 80s and 90s. The other parent was only 58.

what really bugs me about all this is the government's double standards - we all know that alcohol abuse costs millions of pounds a year to this country - night time - particularly weekends, the main job of the police is sorting out drunken "revellers"" falling out of drinking establishments, courts deal with alcohol related offences ranging from GBH, drink driving, domestic abuse et al, yet the governemt allows advertising in all forms. Bars offer "happy hours" and special offers and the supermarkets offer great deals on bulk buys, particularly with Christmas coming up

Ever seen special offers on tobacco products? I never have and would not expect to

Many moons ago I worked for Gallaher - the cost of a packet of Benson and Hedges at that time was around 3/6 - Gallaher got 6d, the government got the rest in tax, so presumably the same proportion exists today - if everyone gave up smoking taxes would go through the roof and tax would therefore have to be levied on an alternative product.

Would it be alcohol? I doubt it - I recall that Michael Martin the last Speaker of the House was selling a branded whisky with the logo of the Houses of Parliament on it - a portcullis!!! You can't get much closer to government than that

Ask a policeman or a nurse in A & E who they would rather treat - a smoker or a drinker!!

There - got that off my chest now!!! :-D

I,m an Ex Smoker.Capstan Full Strength.Gave it up 20 yrs ago.The price of Cigs now is really too much,However if the Government really wanted to stop people smoking they should just Ban The Import of it,(More likely to see a squadron of Flying Pigs) as the taxes from it are quite considerable.Banning it in cars? well its up to the individual to decide this, most cars now come with Air Con which can be switched on,Ashtrays and lighters are installed in most. But if Men or women like to be Kissed By an Ashtray or smell like one,Thats Their freedom of choice, which they are entitled to make. :-S

I think if the driver of a car, who has bought, insured and taxed it, is 'alone' in the car he should be able to have a smoke in peace regardless of what anyone thinks.

However having been at the receiving end of unwanted smoke anything which protects the non smokers from the sheer selfishness of ' I must have my cig' has to be a good thing.

My grandmother smoked most of her life and was in her 80's when she died. Since doing family history I have found the rest of her family lived into their late 90's so the cigs might have cost her 10 years. -jl

Just as an aside. When buying a new to me car, the first thing I look at is the ash tray for signs of it having been smoked in because if it has you usually find that the inside roof is stained with nicotine, and also despite valetting the smell never goes.

I'm not a smoker, and welcomed the ban in public places, but this is just silly. How will it be policed? I see plenty of drivers using mobiles - if these are not prosecuted, how will the smokers be? Do we really want the over-stretched police force doing this rather than catching speeders, drunk/dangerous drivers or un-roadworthy cars?

Or those who tear through our 30 mph village at 45 :-(

Julia Report 22 Nov 2011 11:19

I am not posting this to be controvercial, I'm really not.
I am a smoker, but............
Mainly in the confines of my own home. I use my common sense as a responsible adult, and I think we all can do that without a government edict, telling us not to smoke in a car particularly when children are on board. I smoke in our own car, but not in other peoples, and would not dream of asking them, if I can.
How do they propose to 'police' this infringement. They cannot do this properly with people still using mobile phones in cars.
I agree wholeheartedly with Ann. We do not need to go any further into a nanny state, than we already are. They should channel their ideas into things that really matter to society eg violence on the streets, carrying knives or offensive weapons, etc.
Having said that, I am off to boil a pigs trotter. Is someone going to report me to the NSPCA, for cruelty to animals. Ha,ha, LOL

I'll do what I bl**dy well please in my private property and in my own spaces.

I don't smoke in the car tbh..but I'm almost tempted to, just to stick two fingers up at the bureaucratic nanny state this country is becoming.

I'm with the majority on this - if people want to smoke in their cars, then leave them be. Goodness me, next thing you know, we'll be told what we can/cannot do in our own homes and gardens!!!!

Personally I think the law should concentrate on tighter control of alcohol, where it's sold and where it's consumed. ;-)

P.S. Oops sorry, forgot to say 'Well Done' to Ann of GG, I like your letter and really hope it gets published!

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 22 Nov 2011 09:32

I agree with Mildred and Island and also add that people do smoke with children in cars.

It is a silly law anyway, how would they police it? They don't even catch all those who use their mobiles in cars now (although in Gloucester there have been a spate of fines for that). However I do think smoking in cars is dangerous, I have seen people with hands off the wheel lighting a cigarette, and I have also seen people frantically beating out hot ash which has fallen into their lap. It would be better if the dangers were emphasized and then it was left to people to make their own decisions.

I am a non smoker, brought up in a household where my father smoked and then for 34 years married to a smoker (who for most of that time never smoked indoors or in the car), he gave up in 1994. And it is the reformed smoker who wrinkles his nose and moves away from people smelling iof smoke.

Helen in Kent Report 22 Nov 2011 09:18

To follow up on something Ann said, I think drinking alcohol in public should be banned. At a recent fireworks display most of the teenagers had a can of beer in their hands. If people want to get legless and be offensive then let everyone do that in their own homes. I like to drink wine but I never feel the need to do it in the streets. Picnickers will just have to go without booze - won't do them any harm - and any organised outdoors do will need a license, just like your average village hall.

SpanishEyes Report 22 Nov 2011 09:08

I only tried a cigaret there or four times when I was 18, however my father smoked Weights, my mother smoked but not regularly, both lived to their mid 80s, my grandfather smoked a pipe and grandma smoked both lived to well into their 80s.

However I do believe that smoking can cause or exacerbate health problems but so can being overweight, underweight, taking drugs etc.

I do not allow anyone to smoke in my car nor can they smoke inside our home, but they can smoke on the verandahs, in the garden and I know that occasionally they have smoked out of their bedroom windows!

I must say though that it amazes me just how much some people spend on ciggarates and then complain the SS or poor wages means that they cannot buy good or sufficient food etc for the family.

Island Report 22 Nov 2011 08:39

I don't smoke so step back from customers in shops who obviously do because, frankly, they stink!
Kids are kids and will pick up on the smelly ones.

If adults without children want to absorb all that smoke and stench in a confined space let them I say!

I do think there are other issues attached to smoking while driving though.
