I've just sent this letter off to my local newspaper - we'll see if they print it and if they do, what response I'll get!!!

"I've heard that smoking in cars is to be banned!!! how soon before smoking at home is banned too? As this nanny state is telling us what we can and can't do, because obviously we can't think for ourselves - I sometimes wonder how I've lived so long - why not consider banning fat people from cake shops - after all, cream cakes are no good to anyone who is overweight and they should not be eating them - oh, and fish and chip shops and kebab shops.

On no account make any restrictions on drinkers - let them carry on causing mayhem on the roads and in A & E departments, causing domestic violence and fighting in the streets, throwing up in the streets so workers have to avoid vomit on their way to work in the morning, and certainly don't stop them urinating in shop doorways in the centre of town - keep allowing advertisements for cheap alcohol and "Happy hours" in pubs

What a wonderful world we live in"

AnnCardiff Report 22 Nov 2011 00:09

why indeed - and if you were a smoker and you did have children in your car, well you would not smoke - you certainly don't need anyone to tell you that

Grandpa used to smoke a pipe in the car while driving us all around and we're still here ! He lived to be 104 !

AnnCardiff Report 22 Nov 2011 00:14

my Dad smoked all his life - killed him in the end I realise but none of us were ever affected and he was eighty when he died

my father in law smoked Capstan Extra Strong all his life and died of an unrelated cause at 95

could I add that I am not advocating smoking!!!!

Following a recent colonoscopy, I was diagnosed with a small patch of diverticulitis.
The specialist said that he had no need to advise me to stop smoking as he was sure I was well aware of the consequences & the decision had to be entirely mine.
What a sensible chap.

Sadly working in a school & seeing kids arrive by car you often see parents smoking in their car, and smell the kids who have just ingested the condensed second hand smoke. I know people will smoke at home, its their choice and conscience regarding their kids health. However home is a bigger space than the inside of a car, especially driving in winter with the windows closed.. :-(

Although I dont agree with the car smoking ban (its the responsibility of the driver if he/she wants to inflict their condensed second hand smoke on their adult passengers/friends, & the adult passengers choice to ask them to stop for the journey) I do agree if the passengers are kids.

I do think its a minority of smoking parents who are irresponsible who have now prompted this ban for all smokers, including those who are more considerate,

I'm just content with the smoking in public ban which benefits myself & my kids for the better. We dont smoke so the car issue doesn't directly affect us.

Is smoked salmon banned yet?

Island

Island Report 22 Nov 2011 08:39

I don't smoke so step back from customers in shops who obviously do because, frankly, they stink!
Kids are kids and will pick up on the smelly ones.

If adults without children want to absorb all that smoke and stench in a confined space let them I say!

I do think there are other issues attached to smoking while driving though.

I only tried a cigaret there or four times when I was 18, however my father smoked Weights, my mother smoked but not regularly, both lived to their mid 80s, my grandfather smoked a pipe and grandma smoked both lived to well into their 80s.

However I do believe that smoking can cause or exacerbate health problems but so can being overweight, underweight, taking drugs etc.

I do not allow anyone to smoke in my car nor can they smoke inside our home, but they can smoke on the verandahs, in the garden and I know that occasionally they have smoked out of their bedroom windows!

I must say though that it amazes me just how much some people spend on ciggarates and then complain the SS or poor wages means that they cannot buy good or sufficient food etc for the family.

To follow up on something Ann said, I think drinking alcohol in public should be banned. At a recent fireworks display most of the teenagers had a can of beer in their hands. If people want to get legless and be offensive then let everyone do that in their own homes. I like to drink wine but I never feel the need to do it in the streets. Picnickers will just have to go without booze - won't do them any harm - and any organised outdoors do will need a license, just like your average village hall.

I agree with Mildred and Island and also add that people do smoke with children in cars.

It is a silly law anyway, how would they police it? They don't even catch all those who use their mobiles in cars now (although in Gloucester there have been a spate of fines for that). However I do think smoking in cars is dangerous, I have seen people with hands off the wheel lighting a cigarette, and I have also seen people frantically beating out hot ash which has fallen into their lap. It would be better if the dangers were emphasized and then it was left to people to make their own decisions.

I am a non smoker, brought up in a household where my father smoked and then for 34 years married to a smoker (who for most of that time never smoked indoors or in the car), he gave up in 1994. And it is the reformed smoker who wrinkles his nose and moves away from people smelling iof smoke.

I'm with the majority on this - if people want to smoke in their cars, then leave them be. Goodness me, next thing you know, we'll be told what we can/cannot do in our own homes and gardens!!!!

Personally I think the law should concentrate on tighter control of alcohol, where it's sold and where it's consumed. ;-)

P.S. Oops sorry, forgot to say 'Well Done' to Ann of GG, I like your letter and really hope it gets published!
