Karen in the desert Report 17 Sep 2011 22:51

Well done to your hubby for handing it in. It's good to know there are honest people around.

I'm wondering if the manbag had been put on the roof of the car while the man opened/unlocked the car door, and then he forgot....it's not uncommon, especially if he had other things in his hands, ie shopping, or a newspaper, or perhaps when he was at the petrol station?
This might explain why the bag was in the road. Doesn't seem like it had been stolen, since the cash, cards and phones etc were still inside. It seems that everything was inside except a set of keys.
He wouldn't have noticed he was without the bag until, perhaps, many many miles later!!! Poor bloke is probably having 40 fits!!

K

P.S. Susanne - did you keep a note of the chap's name/address? It might be worth phoning to let him know it's been found and handed in - especially as he isnt local and is possibly on holiday or travelling.....except since he no longer has money or credit cards he's probably gone home!!!!!!!

Karen's posting sounds a good suggestion, as it happened to me many, many years ago.

I had two little ones under 2 years and must have put my purse on the roof of the car prior to loading them into the back seat. I was oblivious to the fact I had lost my purse - hadn't needed it again that day. My husband turned up some hours later with it, as he had a call to say it had been found some distance from where I loaded the car. (Some phone numbers were in the purse.)

Just wish the person who found my handbag hanging on a trolley in Morrisons carpark had been as honest about 10 years ago.

Elisabeth - who now sounds totally idiotic.

i wou;ld like to know if he got his things back, would never except any reward, not my property in the first place.x :-)

SueMaid Report 23 Sep 2011 23:44

I would imagine that if the gentleman got his stuff back the police wouldn't tell him who handed it in - it would be a privacy issue. After all some people would not like a stranger to have their name and phone number. Silly I know but the police have to be so careful these days.

to be fair it would be nice to get a thank you,my hubby handed over almost a thousand pounds worth of phones and i pods, plus money, cards and pin numbers,if he was not an honest person, he could have had a field day.x :-)

SueMaid

SueMaid Report 24 Sep 2011 03:18

Well he is an honest man and that's to be admired because I don't think everyone would do that - sadly. I hope he does get a 'thank you' because he deserves to have his honesty acknowledge.

I would give the station a ring and see if the man got it back ok. He might have been ill or something.
I would have handed it in too and if offered a reward I would accept if I was sure the person could afford it,an give it to charity.

Maybe the chap is away from home at the mo, on holiday or business, so not contactable altho I would have thought the police could trace him from the phone or by contacting one of the banks or c.cd people.

He is lucky your hubby is an honest person, some people wouldn't bother and would have as was said, had a field day with all the valuables in the bag.

Hope you hear something, keep us posted.

I hope the bag is returned to it's rightful owner & he is lucky that your husband found it. Last year I had to drop a prescription in at our doctors on my way to work. It was about 5.45 am as I start work at 6am. It was dark but I noticed something laying in the carpark, went to have a look on my way back & it was a small leather bag, very damp & quite heavy. I picked it up & took it to work & told my boss. We looked through it & it belonged to one of the dr's at our pacttice. Inside was a copy of his passport, money, his checkbook, lots of other bits but also blank prescriptions. We called the police & they came to my work place & picked it up. We think he put it on top of his car as he unlocked & then drove off, so could have been there for hours. Well I never heard a thing, did'nt want a reward but was annoyed that I did,nt even get a thankyou from him. I still would hand things in even knowing I might not get a thankyou.

I,m not sure whether the Police would have contacted the owner. As far as they are concerned it is up to him to get in touch with them.

As for giving him contact details for the person who found the bag. I doubt they would have done that either. As for saying thank you. If the police didnt give him any contact details he couldnt say thank you.

The only way you will know if it has been collected is by ringing the Police yourself.

Sounds like the sort of bag a taxi driver uses (my husband, son and friends all cabbies) use a bag like this. So glad someone honest found it, we have so often found things left by accident in back of cab, and I remember once having to go to the bakers for a large cake box to return a man's fur hat to Germany, he had left it in the cabin on the way to the airport, we received a lovely letter in return + a reward.

We found a purse on the pavement about 2 yrs ago now
we handed it into our local police station and we had to give our name and address in case the owner wanted to thank us ...which she did by sending a card with a cheuqe , but we never cashed the cheuqe .

I was wondering about "the bag story".

Perhaps the police no longer contact people in cases like this, but wait for THEM to report it lost or stolen....in which case, how would the chap know which police station to contact if he's not local, ie a travelling salesman or someone on holiday, and didn't even notice the bag gone until the next stop when it was needed.
What if he'd stopped to get petrol, filled up and then on going to pay, realised he no longer had his bag.....oooops!!!!!!! :-0

If he has got the bag back, and doesn't know who handed it in, then he may (if he's a nice person) place a notice in the classifieds of your local newspaper, so keep your eye out!!! I've seen notices on similar lines in our little freebie weekly paper ...."many thanks to the kind person who handed in my purse which I'd dropped when I was in town last Saturday"....type of thing.

I was once driving past our local golf course and saw something fluttering on the edge of the road. I was sure it looked like bank notes. I backed up to find an open wallet containing £720 in notes and a flight home ticket. I took it to the police station. The following week a lady turned up with a bottle of wine and some biscuits saying the the gentleman from abroad had given her £10 and asked her to get something for me.
