here in anglesey if its not an emergency or life threatening, you are told to drive to the nearest general hos or get someone to drive you,the nearest hospital 22miles away!it leaves the paramedics time to see to the real emergency cases.it could be a matter of life and death to a heart attack patient,my dad had a heart attack just before xmas and the paramedics where on the door step within 5mins,they saved his life,do i mind driving 22miles to my local hospital with a non emergency condition?of course not.x

I have a couple of times called the ambulance service for my OH, once with chest pains and twice with diabetes related collapses. They have also come for me with unstable angina which required hospital admittance. OH doesnt need hospital for the collapses as once he is brought round I can deal with him, but I need paramedics to bring him round.

You will be charged if an ambulance is called and you are transported to hospital following a road accident. I also had a letter from my employers advising me that they would be claiming back sick pay over and above SSP.

Correspondence from the NHS trust and my employer were dealt with by my insurer who recovered the losses from the other party who were at fault.

Hello Dawnie, hope you and the troops are well.
Your last point has reminded me of an incident.
Some twenty odd years ago, my son was in a very bad road accident, and ended up on life support, being in hospital for many weeks.
A few weeks after it happened, I was at home one day, when I had a call from the hospital. Panic set in, as you would expect, but it was from the hospital finance department. They wanted to know the name of the son's motor insurers, which at that point, I could not recollect.
I asked them why they needed these details and was told they wanted to charge the insurers for the ambulance and the cost of his nursing, whilst in hospital. As I had never heard of this before, I asked them how much the cost was to date. They said £67,000. Whew, It would probably be at least £167,000., these days.
However, unless they got these details from the police, they did not come back to me about it.
Take Care

I think in our town they have a special unti based in the toen centre to deal with drunks who don't need to go to hospital. I have always thought that if you drink yourself into a stupor and need hospital treatment then you should have to pay for it. I bet they don't get too many drunks in American hospitals.

Thanks Rita answers a lot of question see GR folk are a font of knowledge.

Kay he did ask if I was bleeding and thankfully wasnt.

Heres another one do they still charge you for ambulance service if you have a car crash? Insurance companies used to pay it for you

Kay????

Kay???? Report 10 Jan 2011 23:03

Had you had been knocked out by the fall or had a suspect break or profuse bleeding then they would have sent an ambulance, but as you were coherent and answering all the medics questions, his experience told him it wasnt life threating,,,

mind had you been in a drunken puch up of a Sat night Dawnie then hey presto you'd have been taken to the hospital door.!!!}}

Very interesting and useful information, Rita, thank you.

That all sounds fair to me.
Quite reassuring too.

Yes, Rita, that is useful to know. I'm fortunate not to have had the need to call an ambulance, but this thread has been very informative and I feel forearmed now, should the possibility arise in the future.

Hello Dawnie...gawd hope you are ok now?? That must have been very frightening!!

As far as l know we don't have anything like that here. The last time l dialled 999 was in May for my brother - in - law. l had phoned the docs first and they said phone the ambulance. He and my oh had capsized in a canoe, b i l went into shock, which l would think you would have suffered too.

You take care now:o))

Just to lower the tone a bit, a few years back we went to some friends' for Sunday lunch, who lived in a three storey, cramped house. The sitting room was in the basement, accessed by an open pine staircase. Needless to say I fell down the stairs before I'd had even a drop, and I landed on one leg, leaving a nasty deep gash, but with the glass of red wine in my hand completely unspilled. Miracle!

We patched up the leg, I drank the wine and we had a nice day. A couple of days later we went camping in the South of France where I was careful in the sea and wore one of those ooze-sucking plasters by day. A fortnight later we came home and I went to see my doctor who said if I had come the day of the accident he would have put stitches in my leg!!!

Well phooey, the leg is great and the scar is really small.

End of story!
