Foggy Report 3 Dec 2010 18:02

I live on the outskirts of Winchester in Hampshire, lovely county and beautiful countryside, with excellent access to London and the south.
Have the new forest on the doorstep, and should you want to visit large shopping places there is Southampton and Portsmouth very near.
Was born in London, but would hate to have to live there now.

I live in a small village in Snowdonia, near the sea, and I love it here. We don't have any of the major stores, supermarkets, DIY etc within 50 miles, but the small town 12 miles away provides most things.
Far from loathing the tourists, we welcome them. They are an important part of the local economy, there being very little else except farming in the area. Without the tourists I doubt we would have what shops we do have.
Being priviledged to live in this beautiful area it is gratifying to know that people from other areas choose to spend their valuable time and money among us for a week or two in the holiday season.

No it is n't a particularly derogatory term. It is used in other parts of the country too. It certainly was in Sussex when I lived and worked there.
Across the border in Kernow they use the word Emmet.
When I used to visit Spain years ago the word was Guiri.
My going to New Zealand instead of staying in England in the cold and grey is just common sense is n't it? Nothing to do with Devon at all. I have family, property and business interests there so when it's winter here , summer there is the obvious time to do it.
I will be back in Devon for the very best time to be here, April, May and June.
If you don't like the local language and colloquial terms you have the option....

Hi Julia, weather permitting OH and me are escaping to Portsmouth for new year. Better shops and prices than we have here. Mind you I am a little concerned at leaving daughters in house while we're gone, I can smell a party a mile away!!!!

Catherine, Bit like that for us when we lived on a Scottish Isle, but no airports and airoplanes, just ferries. Island life, whilst generally idyllic, can become very insular at times

I'm in Guernsey and its ok. Nice in summer but when winter arrives we get boats cancelled because of wind and airport closed due to snow and ice. Feeling a bit marooned, which might be nice if I was in Caribbean, lol.
