The Doctor's Man


Before NHS came in in 1947, the doctor had to be paid.

If you couldn't afford to pay him immediately, your name was given to the Doctor's Man, he wrote it down in a little account book, and he would visit every week to collect the amount that you had agreed to pay.


My brother was seriously ill about 1942 with some sort of heart trouble , and spent 6 months lying on his back either in bed or on a downstairs sofa, at home. The doctor used to make house calls.


I can remember the Doctor's Man visitng the house until at least 1952/3 because Mum and Dad still had not managed to pay off the debt.

I asked my sister if she had heared anything from her son who is currently travelling 'Not a dickie bird' was her reply! haven't heared this expression for a very long time.

Reminded of this when I read a post on General re a woman 's name Ninon...

My mother used to describe a woman's flimsy clothing or a garment that was flimsy as "like a ninon over nothing". Ninon is a sheer fabric, a term no longer used...

Sides to middle, of bed sheets which were cut down the middle, hemmed then the outer edges were joined and became the middle.
