My first experience of a "shower" was coming home from school, stripping off and my dad hosing us down in the garden with his finger over the end of the hose pipe! Brrrr, it was freezing!

How much I appreciate this thread an all your replies. Oh, joys of sharing a lot of memories -and bring forgotten things back. Yes, sawdust on the floor -in the butcher's shop most definitely. Remember making patterns in the floor with the toe of me shoe waiting for Ma to be served!

Radio powered by accumulator - no- then you are not as old as me !!

I used to have to take it to the local garage to be re charged in my dolls pram

Looking back it was pretty lethal-acid !

Jean (Monmouth) Report 2 Jul 2010 19:23

We had two accumulators, one in the garage and one in use, as we lived an eight mile bus ride away and darent miss the bus while we waited for the recharge. Usually lasted a week. If I was with MUm the last job for me when in town was to collect the accumulator.!

Anyone remember those huge red Berkel bacon slicers in the butchers shop or on the "cold cuts" counters. They were used to slice both raw bacon and cooked meats Wow, 'Elf and Safety would have a field day with that now! - Still here to tell the tale, though -lol! But those machines used to scare the hell out of me when I was a nipper!

Jean/Frederick,
Thank you both for the info (Frederick i'm well impressed with you)
Everyone has really jogged my memory,
I've often wondered if my late mum was telling me porkies when i was only allowed a few sweeties, so i owe her an apology, Sorry mum!!!
I remember mum holding my nose and shoveling a spoonful of "Virol" in (a malt extract syrup i think) gwad it was awful, and my nan used to put my hair in "rags" to make ringlets, if i let my hair grow, even now i could get it to go the same way. Got visions of the film "Whatever happened to Baby Jane" remember Bette Davies in that anyone? lol, keep it short now!!!

jan50 Report 2 Jul 2010 21:58

OMG! Rags in your hair to make ringlets. Gee, did I suffer from those before being a bridesmaid or whatever! Did your Mum "set" them with sugar and water? Mind did to make them hold - the days before sophisticated hair products, eh!

Georgygirl Report 2 Jul 2010 22:46

Oh Jan-we must have been "posh" cos mine was held in place with "Amarmi" (i think thats how it was spelt) setting lotion, hair would'nt have moved in a hurricane!!!! it was torture, i can still recall the pain now, and a "Twink" home perm was a must if you were a bridsmaid, i looked as though i'd had my fingers in the electric socket, i cringe looking at the old photos. Oh-the good ole days!!!!
Thank you Susan-Great thread

Anyone remember Provident Cheques! or that tin money from the Co-Op.
I remember being given a spoon of malt at school, cod liver oil tablets, nitty nora, warm milk in little bottles. Toys anyone remember Merlin the Magican, you woul place him on a question and he would spin around and stop pointing at the correct answer, or about those typewriters where you had to turn the dial to each individual letter.
Listen with Mother.
Muffin the Mule.
Saturday Morning Picture Club.

jan5o ....you was rich . rags !!..... I had brown paper strips in my hair ..LOL

I wish I could relive the excitement of those freezing Christmas mornings, waking in the early morning and tingling with excitement at the day to come.
Not just the presents and food, but the camaraderie......going to neighbour's houses for a glass of cherry for grown ups and cordial or green ginger wine for us; then getting out into the snowy slushy streets to relatives to exchange presents and drink & eat more.
Repeating all the Carols from the night before ..........such memories !!

Torchy the Battery Boy

Torchy, Torchy the little battery boy
I’m a clever walkie-talkie toy
With bright blue eyes and golden hair
I’ve a magic beam that can shine anywhere.

Torch-y-y, Torch-y- y!
The little battery boy.

Torchy, Torchy the battery boy,
I’m a walkie-talkie toy,
Press my switch, see my bulb start to gleam,
It’s the most magic light you-u-u ha-a-a-ve seen!

taaa daaa!
