LindainBerkshire1736004 Report 10 Feb 2010 19:39

Good afternoon ladies
I had an appointment at the hospital 2 weeks ago and the registrar decided to decrease my thyroxine as he said it was too high and he thought sometimes hair loss came with too much thyroid!!! I am not convinced
Well I had a most interesting morning. I now have a beautiful head of hair. My own has been failing for a few years and my husband has been quite worried for me with our daughters wedding coming up. Well I finally gave in and we went to a special shop. Now I feel and look so much better and all I have to do is give it my new wig a shake and it is back to looking beautiful(well almost).
I never dreamt it would come to this. But I do feel better.
A friend came to tea this afternoon and her daughter used to cut my hair....... she thought I'd been to a new hairdresser or coloured my hair again after 2 years of leaving it to nature. She was amazed when I told her the truth. She said it looked good and she had no idea it was a wig.
Then my daughter popped in after work and she did a double take and said how much younger I looked and was pleased for me too.

Well the lady in the shop said it was alopecia and unlikely to grow back with my other health issues.
I got the tax taken off my purchase and everything I bought.

I will let you know how I get on and comments made too.

Linda :o) XxX

Thanks for your posting Liz. I'm having trouble getting my replies to go on thread.

Interesting about kelp tablets, I had forgotten about kelp.

All the best

I take no drugs except sometimes 5htp which is a natural antidepressant, and I have in the past taken kelp tablets too and seen some hair growth then. I also used to take Vit b, the yeast tablets at the time, as they are supposed to help too.

I can't decide if I have a slight regrowth at the mo or not so am going to ask to see a specialist so that they can advise. I do suffer from flaky scalp and have been prescribed Nizoral shampoo in the past but that just used to strip the hair colourant out. I haven't coloured my hair since Sept because of my fall when I hit my head on the ice so have more than 2" grey roots showing, it doesn't look too bad as I had my hair cut in a short bob last week but definitely shows where the blond colourant is on there and then the pepper and salt roots.

I did go to see a dermatologist ,She thought it could be hereditary and also the tablets I'm taking Simvastian,Cardicor and Ramlpril.
My GP thought that it was nonsense and he'd had reports of increased hair growth....umm
but he did say that stress can cause hair loss....me stressed never !!....pmsl

this is a few of many web sites about the medication i'm taking and hair loss....

-----------------------------------------------------
http://www.spacedoc.net/statins_hair_loss.html

Yes, statin drugs contribute to human hair loss. Most of the drug companies have even admitted this when questioned by statin users noticing that hair loss is accelerating since they started taking statins, but their disclaimers do not emphasize this fact simply because most people consider hair loss as very important, so hair loss becomes a threat to marketing.
------------------------------------------------
http://www.interchemist.co.uk/drugs/c/cardicor.html

Cardicor
Known Side Effects
Bronchospasm, low blood pressure, cold hands and feet, slow heart beat, tiredness on exertion, sleep disturbance, heart failure, thrombocytopaenia (reduced platelets in blood), gastrointestinal upset, hair loss. If skin rash or unexplained dry eyes arise, gradually withdraw drug. Any adverse effects should be reported to the Committee on the Safety of Medicines (CSM).

------------------------------------------------------

http://ezinearticles.com/?The-Effects-of-Ramipril-and-Hair-Loss&id=514963

Ramipril works by causing blood vessels to relax, lowering blood pressure and increasing the supply of blood and oxygen to the heart. Although effective at intended use, there have been concerns about the sides effects of Ramipril. One of the concerns is the side effect of Ramipril and hair loss.

Angelsong I will look in to see how you go on.

Please do update, my hair falls out more than our long-haired cat's and I am always picking hair off my clothes. Only noticable effect is hair line slightly receding. Have psoriasis of the scalp, which may be part of the problem.

Today I have been to see my GP who took me off steroids six weeks since. He admits there is nothing else he can do for me (great), but has referred me to a dermatologist. No trichologist in the area apparently. I have an appointment for the beginning of March, and will keep the thread updated.

Best wishes to you all.

I have been tested for thyroid too and doesn't seem to be a problem there.

I do use colourants on my hair and have done most of my life, started using the newer 10 minute one when it came out so wonder if it is causing the problem. I don't think so really, I am sure it is genetic remembering Mum and my Gt Aunts hair in their older years.

Interesting to read the later replies. Just got up after Swine Flu.

I was tested for thyroid probs, which I was certain would be positive, but they came back negative. Have never had a perm in my life, the only colours were rinses when I was nineteen.

Hair loss can also be a symptom of under-active thyroid. Look it up on Google. There is a lot of information there. Diabetics should watch for thyroid disease, as it is another glandular problem.

Yet again I quote from Take a Break Mag Issue3, page 33

The woman in question is diabetic and on medication and wondered if it was the cause of her hair loss etc
The reply from a tricologist said it was more likely she was noticing a gradual hair thinning as a result of aging or a genetic hair loss. He advised her to see a tricologist for better diagnosis.
There is more to the answer than the above but I just typed a small part.
Take a look when you go in the newsagent before next week as the next issue will be out on Thursday.

Like most of your replies I am in my mid 60's. Have always had fine hair, but 9 yrs ago suffered a heart attack. Was put on simvastatin, blood pressure tablets, beta blocker and was also diagnosed with diabetes, so also have metformin and insulin, oh also aspirin. At least 3 of these products mention hair loss, so didn't stand much chance. It was my hairdresser who noticed my hair loss about 5 yrs ago. I was paranoid at the time, all my family said don't worry, but untill it happens to you no one can understand how you feel inside. Eventually I stopped worrying about it(actually pleased to still be alive) that seemed to help and touch wood it has not got worse, I went from blond to bright red, short spikey hair and use hair thickening shampoo, Tresemme 24 hr. Body Ampllifying Mousse and 24 hr. Body boosting spray both together and then their hairspray. Regards Carol

I did have hair loss due to chemo, but it came back again, curlier but with a receding hairline which people only notice when I get fed up with having a fringe. The worst part was dropping hair everywhere by the handfull!

Hi Everyone. I'm only 24 and at the moment do not suffer from this very distressing condition, but I have an aunt who did. At around 50 her hair virtually fell out overnight. She went to her doctor who then tested her blood for a number of disorders. It turned out that she was severly anaemic as a result of fibroids causing heavy menstrual loss. At this time she was told that hair loss due to anaemia was quite common. Once the anaemia was corrected her hair did regrow, but it was a very slow process. Coping with hair loss is such a traumatic experience and my heart goes out to everyone who suffers in this way.

I think I read somewhere that Sheffield University were doing research into hair loss in women, has anyone else heard of it ?

I am in the same position as Mrs P-no hair-anywhere !!

I was told I had "male type hair loss" by a Consultant Dermatoagist
some years ago.

I do not think so-look at all the hairy bald men about !!!

My sister-in-law's hairdresser says it is a much more common problem than is realised

I do wear a wig but did not know about the possibility of a grant-thenks for that they are quite expensive
