That wasn't Liz that did it Huia it was her friend.

Jude Dobson just came on the TV Huia - with her health diary and I wasn't paying any attention - next thing OH said talk to her and was pointing at me. The advertisment was " do you suffer with bloating etc"
Charming!!!

Hi Huia, we were in Rotorua at Easter as part of our New Zealand holiday. Beautiful country!

We liked Rotorua very much and went to see the lakes and hot springs but the smell of sulphur took a bit of getting used to!

Huia Report 31 Oct 2009 17:50

Hi there, Helen. I am glad you liked it. If I ever sell our house up here I might go to live in or near Rotorua as my son lives just out of town. I havent decided yet though. Still got lots of 'junk' to sort through and hopefully get rid of, if I ever find the time to do it. I have been out every day since I got home, although it was for only an hour yesterday. Today I am going visiting so another day my junk is safe.

Hi Huia

We are heading off to Hamilton today to have lunch with one of my friends from High School.
We would like to move to around Tauranga - somewhere like Welcome Bay.

It's not just the smell of sulphur Helen - it also ruins good cutlery - I like Rotorua but am not sure I would want to live there. Never know when a hole might pop up in your backyard. Used to love watching the mud pools bubbling when I was a child - found them fascinating.

Cheers have a good day all
And you behave Liz - keep your friend in check.

Hi Huia, I am so pleased you had a wonderful trip to the Choral Convention. Did you enjoy the Singing I am sure you enjoyed the company,it must be so nice to be out and about once more you deserve it I am very happy for you.
I too wear a hearing aid it seems to be a part of getting old, you learn to smile a lot when in crowds of people and yes you do get some strange looks.
Huia I enjoyed your post about your holiday, I too would like to visit New Zealand once more as I would like to see more of the Nth Island.
Huia I need to send you the money for the Calendar so I need a Box No. or an address please. My daughter has conjuntivitis also, you do seem to have had it for some time, I hope it clears up very soon and as the girls have said please watch that spot .Kindest Regards Marie from OZ

Marie, the calendar was posted yesterday with my address on the back. You should receive it in the not too distant future.

I went to our Gen. rooms yesterday to see if I could find the cemetery where a man was buried, for another member of GenesR. Unfortunately no luck. The records are of transcriptions on headstones so perhaps he doesnt have a headstone. Some time I will have to go to the NZ Soc. of Gen. rooms in Panmure to see if they have an index of wills, but I cant see me having the time to go for a couple of weeks at least, possibly longer. I am hoping the person will get the death cert as ours give more info than the English ones and it could give more clues.

Huia Report 3 Nov 2009 19:21

NZ death certs in 1893 included parents names, with MMN, when and where buried, where born and how long they have lived in NZ, where m and age on marriage and to whom, ages of living issue, ie M 64, 58, F 60. Not too long after that, the date of birth was included. Of course it is only as good as the knowledge of the informant, but there are still some useful hints there.

goodness I wish ours gave all that info.

I haven't read this thread before but it was the mention of Rotarua that intrigued me. Then I saw that Ann in gloc is also adding to the thread, "hello Ann". Ann is a great help to me on my culinary thread.
Many years ago i had a penpal who lived in Rotarua, sadly I cannot remember his namebut he wrote so well and described the surrounding countyside very elequently. I was sad when we lost conntact and have tried hard to remember his name but it evades me.
I do remember that his older brother was a fireman,,,I wonder why that has stayed with me.
My name then was Bridget Farady and we llived in London UK, is there anyway i could send a message, perhaps to a local newsapaper to try an reconnect even just to say how he impressed me about his country and the Maoris. (hope I have spelt that correctly!)

Bridget

Huia Report 3 Nov 2009 23:41

Bridget, if you remember his name you can pm me and I will look up our electoral rolls, although if he has moved away from Rotorua I would have a lot of rolls to look through and if he is a Bill Smith or some other 'popular' name it would not be so easy.

I could ask my son for the address of one of their local papers so you could write. Most of them now have email addresses, I think.

I had a penfriend in England and I have absolutely no recollection of what her name was. I think she was in Sussex but am not even sure of that. I cant have alzheimers, it is the long-ago things that I forget.

Hi Huia

I have read your description of the Choral Weekend with great interest. I have been down to NZ 3 times now, 1976, 1992 and 2000.

The OH and daughter spent a year down there in 1992/93, I was unable to take a year's leave of absence, so ended up joining them for just 2 months. We went to Rotorua and did the tour, daughter was fascinated by the weaving workshops, and eventually was accepted to a 3 week weaving class at the school at Rotorua, leanring how to weave grass skirt and baskets. She was absolutely fascinated by the Maori lifestyle, and was lucky enough to be invited to join certain families for the evening..

I well remember that church with the window ............. and like so many people I would have loved to have taken a picture myself. And we went to the Marae at Ohinematu for one of the cultural shows.

We didn't go to a hangi ......... daughter had been working (volunteering) at the Plant Centre at the uni in Palmerston North, and we were invited to a hangi that they had for Christmas. We thought that would be a much better memory, as a spontaneous event.

The name Simon Carrington also struck a note with me ..... my OH went to school with the cousin of another of the King's Singers, so we have been aware of them since they first started singing together while at uni in England.

I wish we had more relations in NZ ...... mine all went to Australia ............. all we have in NZ is my brother's boyhood best friend who has lived in New Plymouth for well over 50 years.
