Ronnie Biggs has been refused parole by Justice Secretary Jack Straw.

Mr Straw rejected a recommendation by the Parole Board which backed the release of Biggs, .

Mr Straw said Biggs was "wholly unrepentant" about his actions and had "outrageously courted the media".

Biggs' son Michael called for Mr Straw to review the decision. "This is not justice," he said. He said his father was in a "life-threatening" condition.

Who's right, and why?

I don't think he cares at this stage in his life...as he says...he will go down in history and he was glad to be part of it......Not taking sides now...but he does have a point!....

In one hundred years time we will all be dead. How many of us will be in the history books.....this is philosophy which has no real feeling, only thought!

Why should he be let out? He has only just served a third of his sentence. Everyone forgets that these thugs, (thats what they were - thugs) hit the engine driver over the head with an iron bar. He never worked again and died 7 years later. Biggs said "he only got a tap) !!!! As for the argument that it costs money to keep him in prison - it will cost the same if he is free, he will go straight into a care home and guess who will pay..................?
After Biggs escaped, he spent the best years of his life in a foreign country but when his health deteriorated and money ran out he came back to the UK so that the NHS could care for him.

The trouble in this country is not that the train robbers got 30 years, (they deserved it), its that murderers today only get 10 years. The judiciary in the UK are totally out of touch with reality.

he is an old man
he cant even talk so no threat to anybody
and he is costing us the taxpayers of this country a fortune
he has served a long time in jail for been a great train robber
how could he be great he got caught
he never killed nobody
he just stole money off the government

well PMs have been doing this for years
they have ripped us all off for years and years
and i dont see any off them in jail

and they have stole millions and millions from us all

i think Jack Straw should some charity towards this man....

He is at the end of his life , let him die with some dignity , he didn't go out to kill anyone ..those that do are the ones who should receive the hard sentences...

just my thinking on the matter..

BarneyKent Report 4 Jul 2009 09:51

The argument that it will cost money to keep him in prison does not hold up. It will cost the same to keep him if and when he comes out. He will go straight into a nursing home and guess who will pick up the tab? Thats right, the same taxpayer who would be paying the prison bill.
Think with your heads folks, not your emotions.

jack mills died of leukemia nothing to do with the robbery

and to keep somebody in a council run nursing home
is far cheaper than in a prison

No he shouldn't be let out.
He evaded his prison sentence for long enough, enjoying life overseas thinking he'd got away with it. Now that he's served just some of his sentence doesn't mean he should be let out because he's ill.

The problem is that sentences these days are ridiculously lenient, and we are in danger of measuring them against this supposedly harsh one given to the train robbers. Sentences are not harsh enough these days, making light of crime, THAT'S what needs to be addressed....while Biggs serves out the rest of his sentence in jail.

Sorry, JoyBoroAngel, but I have to ask you to clarify your post.
Mr Biggs should be freed because:
He is an old man - what do you think should be the maximum age for putting a convicted criminal in prison? 80? 50? 20?
He has served a long time in prison - No, he spent a long time on the run, charging people £50 a pop to be photographed with him. Do you really think that this should count towards his sentence?
He just stole money off the government - Believe it or not, the government does not have ANY money. It belongs to you, me and the rest of the population. Can you really justify letting him out because he stole our money?
He is costing the taxpayers a fortune - As a reason for letting him go free you must thereore let every other prisoner out for the same reason surely?
I do agree with your part about the PMs ripping us off though.

BarneyKent

BarneyKent Report 4 Jul 2009 10:27

Heaven help us from bleeding heart liberals who would let every villain out of prison just because they are ill.............
Jack Mills the train driver may have died of leukemia but he was a top grade main line engine driver whose health was ruined by "a slight tap on the head" and he never worked again. I repeat - the train robbers were thugs.
Keep Biggs in jail until he is ready for his box.

reggie kray got let out to die
he was by far a worse person than ronnie biggs
ronnie has PD and is no threat to nobody
if he was well i would say leave him there to rot
but i am trying to show some compassion
for his family if not for him
ronnie is near to death anyway
so the only diffrence it will make is to his family

and i do have every sympathy for jack mills family to

Buster Edwards was part of the same robbery gang
and he won all your hearts when played by Phil Collins

If he'd served his sentence at the time instead of running away to enjoy himself he would have been out by now. Why should he have it both ways? He was given a sentence, he needs to serve it. He's had plenty of time free to see his family.

I don't want to sound harsh but so what that he's old and dying? So what that he's not happy? So what that his son doesn't think this is justice? It IS justice. I can't see that the son of a villain would have much of an opinion about justice in any event so how can we take him seriously?

Leave him there.
