thank you maggie
like you say it's a case of waiting for a new site then where there is subscription for lower rates or travelling and getting that info.
To me discovering GR felt like wow we are moving forward in this country to fast tec to discovering our past just like the USA (BY THE WAY THEY HAVE SOME VERY CHEAP SITES EVEN TO UK INFO).
It got me so interested so quickly,
it just feels like a door has just gone up in front of me that i need quite a lot of money to unlock.
hard work and a few days off may work out cheaper now...oh well
it was looking good.
cheers maggie

Brian,

The notion that you can research your family history back to Jesus with the push of a button on the internet is unfortunately a fallacy. As Joan has already stated she has been doing hers for 25 years and I have been researching mine for 11. It's very hard work, very expensive (taking into account certificates, Wills and copies of sundry other documents you might come across) but oh so satisfying

yeh me about 6 months and i don't remember trudging round to find out this info, just went online and there it was so quickly glad to be in the naughties doing this but it appears the old way will be cheaper so will have to start learning a little bit from you guys who have done it the hard way.
I work so many hours a few days of work doing it the old way will be fun and more enjoyable i guess.
will look forward on some tips from you old timers cheers.
not frightend to put the hard work in.
cheers

Brian,

Don't forget to Google too for the name/area you're interested in as it's surprising what can pop up. There are also quite a lot of Parish Record transcriptions on the internet, depending on the area you're researching.

i have at least seven relations i have googled and prooven so many ways, when i found 1 i was amazed after 1 month into research.
to find seven just blew me away. i have found cemetarys for many family members re 1 and 2 world war including one in singapore which my mother in law went to this year, i was able to give her the location of her fathers memorial location. given she never met him has prooven the web such a great tool and all that info was free.

Brian

Brian Report 6 Mar 2009 01:22

i have done so well with other family members it's a shame that my own family name has been so hard to proove details of i've come to a wall that the 1911 census would proove or disproove. unfortunately my father went all his life without illness and when he retired was diagnosed with parkinsons disease then altzeimers and the info i would like isn't available to me. as good as my dads sense of humour is recalling is so impossible i don't push.
birth cert for his dad will let me move forward and thats my next day off
cheers guys good hunting.

Hi Island,

He sounds like an enthusiastic newby. Programmes like WDYTYA make it seem so easy don't they - they really should make it clear to people how much hard work and expense is involved

I think Brian's refering to the freedom of information act, thing is any agency you ask for your or a family member you have power of attorney for can levie a fee for copying costs plus mailing charges, and if it takes more than a certian length of time I think they can charge you for the working time its taken.

Brian you've clearly been lucky having reasonable success early on with certain branches, but no ones going to have done all your family history instantly there for you, unless you have a family member thats put the time and effort in before you.

At the end of the day I accept there are costs to be covered storing and processing these records to make access eaiser, I don't expect it to be there for free in the format I require.. Anyone who does needs to get there backside to the records office for a day, try doing things the old fashioned way, as this will make you realise what a bargin your subcription fee's are.

Having done a history degree which meant trawling through old records in various formats, I am grateful companies have taken the intiative and put the information online, saves travel and the frustraightion of only being allowed to use a pencil.

RIGHT AUDREY, AFTER MUCH TRAWLING I CAN GIVE YOU THE ANSWER SO MANY ARE UNWILLING TO OFFER, RE 1911 CENSUS
WHY ON THIS SITE I DON'T KNOW WHY PEOPLE WHO HAVE THE ANSWER ARE SO NOT WILLING TO GIVE.
1. IF YOU WISH TO SEARCH 1911 CENSUS NOW (THIS YEAR) THEN YOU NEED TO SIGN UP AND BUY CEDITS TO FINDMYPAST. COM.
COST OF ONE CENSUS RECORD £3.95.
2. GENES REUNITED OBVIOUSLY DON'T HAVE RIGHTS TO THIS CENSUS AND FROM WHAT SOME PEOPLE HAVE TOLD ME, MAY NOT HAVE FOR SOME YEARS.
3. SOME SITES OUTSIDE OF UK SEEM TO HAVE THIS INFO AVAILABLE TO THEM
4. THE CENSUS HAS BEEN RELEASED TO FMP EARLY TO START MONEY ROLLING IN BEFORE ITS REAL RELEASE.
5. THE RELEASE DATE APPEARS TO BE 100 YEARS ON (SO 2012)
6. I AM GUESSING BUT I BELIEVE MANY SITES WILL BE UP AND RUNNING THEN AND A WEE BIT OF COMPETITION MAY WELL OFFER CHEAPER SUBS.
7. MANY PEOPLE OUTSIDE OF (GR) WILL SEE A REAL POTENTIAL IN THE MARKET TO BUILD THERE OWN SITES.
8. WAITING 3 YEARS COULD SAVE ME AND YOU A FEW QUID.
9. IF MONEY IS NO OBJECT TO SOME HOPEFULLY THAT INFO MAY FLOW DOWN TO PEOPLE ON THIS SITE WHO CAN'T QUITE AFFORD MUCH MORE THAN THEY ARE ALREADY PAYING.
10. DOING IT THE OLD WAY PULLING OUT OR BUYING CERTS MAY GIVE US MORE INFO AND BE A WEE BIT CHEAPER. IF WE ARE WILLING TO PUT SOME HARD WORK IN GOING TO LOCAL REG OFFICE ETC.
11. THATS SOMETHING I PLANNED TO DO ANYWAY TO FIRM UP MY TREE..AND £7 FOR A CERT WITH LOADS OF INFO WE CAN KEEP AS REAL PROOF.
12. I AM GUESING THE PRICE OF CERTS WILL FLY UP IN THE NEXT YEAR LETS SEE.

Brian

Brian Report 7 Mar 2009 00:32

IN REPLY TO JOAN
THANKS BY THE WAY, ITS NOT THAT I DONT WANT TO PAY
I MADE A DECISSION 6 MONTHS AGO TO PAY A SUB TO (GR) THINKING THAT THE CENSUS WOULD BE PUBLISHED HERE WHEN THEY WERE RELEASED. I'M HAPPY TO PAY BECAUSE SOME ONE HAS TO TYPE IN ALL THE INFO GENERATED FROM CENSUS'S ECT AND THAT COST MONEY, WHAT I DIDN'T REALISE WAS THAT SOME OTHER COMPANY OR SITE COULD GRAB THIS INFO FOR THEIR OWN, AND FORCING US TO CHANGE SITE TO CARRY ON....
I JUST THOUGHT IT WOULD COME TO (GR)
SORRY IF I AM EASILY LED AND A BIT KNEW BUT THAT'S WHAT I THOUGHT, I WONDER HOW MANY OTHERS LIKE ME THINK THAT THIS IS THE CASE.

Brain

for starters- STOP YELLING- typing in caps is considereed yelling, so unless you have a good reason to type in caps its polite not to.

You are not the fountain of knowledge, I believe Audery was pointed in the right direction, and informed of the threads that contain all the informaiton you have just reguritated.

I will tell you this even paying to see orginal documents will be cheaper for me than ordering every certificate that could be my great grandad, as he had a common name, just wish they'd get on with releasing the rest of yorkshire.

Your implication certs will go up in price as far as I know is completely unfounded, as they'd have done this when the 1901 census was released or even in January when the counties they had scanned to date were released.

By the way, certificates are not 'real proof' and should be treated with the same sceptisim any other source would be, as they are dependent on our ancestors being honest and unlike today they didn't have to provide evidence providing who they are.

I think stating people are unwilling to give answers is the perfect way to annoy a lot of people who put a lot of time and effort into helping people on here, please respect their knowledge and experience rather than sounding off like a know it all teenager.

Brian Report 7 Mar 2009 00:53

sorry pme
i didn't wish to offend you
ive changed my caps setting and i hope you find this better reading
very sorry.
I very much understand and appreciate people have worked so hard learning their skill and passing it on to others so forgive my lack of knowledge with the genes research you are aware i guess by your remark that i am what you older guys call a (newbee). still learning every day the way to work and happy to receive any advice thank you.
At work we have this similar understanding young chaps come and work with me, and i share as much info as i can with them. But like my children i have always given them a great deal of respect. common courtesy goes a long way in my job. And have never been rude to them re their lack of knowledge.
one day they well be teaching my son and i would hope they would show him the respect that i show them.
any helpfull advice is always better than crittisisum.

Brian

Brian Report 7 Mar 2009 00:59

dear pme
if sites online are costly than people will revert paying £7 for certs
and this will increase, and when it does to my knowledge the £7 cost may be increased to meet demand.
brian thanks for info

Brian

Brian Report 7 Mar 2009 01:12

To pme
your so right re information about census's etc
we all have to beleive the tree we are searching is real, and proof, and all manner of yeah that was my grandad or great grandad.
But reality is that many trees can be so wrong. and some relating to just parents.
Its all an assumpstion no real proof, for obvious reason
and when i see some trees holding 10000 relatives like you i have to question how could you proove so much info in one lifetime.
my site has included family pictures and you can see family resemblences. but even that's not 100%
your so right
