I have been typing my Dads memories he wrote down I have been at it all day and still have about 9 pages to go.He filled the pages from the first line being right at the top and the bottom one was the last piece of white paper you can see what they call a full page he goes on about the Horses he tell you some poeple had Horses and Carts and Ponies and cart he tells you how some men had carts that were brightly painted . he said now a day you have to have an MOT on your car to make sure it is road worthy and safe But no one every inspected the horses near to their house to see if they were well and feed properly or that the carts they pulled were fit for the road and that the poor horse or pony was capable of his size to pull the loads without being cruel.
This will show you what a kind hearted person he was.
I thought you might like to hear it Sue.
Love rita x

Mo all you have said was the same as my growing up a long tin bath hanging on the outside wall and Dad would bring it in and put it infront of the old black range he wiped it with a flannel and took the boiling water out of the brick built boiler and fill the bath putting in a bucket of cold water every now and then /my sister would go first them me and then my Mum and then Dad.then Mum and Dad would drag it out side and tip the water down the drain he wouls come back in wipe the bath and hang ut back on the wall . He use to say I hope you girls have not blocked the drains and a smail would break over his face. The ice cart would come round on a friday morning and the man would hack into the blocks and people would go out with bowls and buy it off him. the kids use to hang around and after he had finished he use to pass the little bits to the kids to suck
hard days but often very happy.
Rita.

Morning all Cuppa anyone (**)? (**)? (**)? (**)? (**)? (**)?
[_]? [_]? [_]? [_]? [_]? [_]?
{**}? [_]
My family were lucky enough in the 50's to have an inside bathroom, not always the loo, but atleast we only had to share the bath water !! and I was one of 6 children. Hair washing only once a week too. No wonder I always had gresy hair as a teenager. Regarding open doors, part of it was that we had very little, but we had respect and knew that we only had what we ourselves had worked for and didn't dream of taking something from anyone else.
Today I think I might wash the nets while the weather holds and also before I am away again. This time taking Father in Law back to Normandy again we didn't get there last year as I had a foot operation.
Check back later. No child today.
Linda :o) XxX

Morning all I got up at 7 but cannot rush around till my foot is better I think it is getting better (fingers crossed ) Linda I was talking about the late 1930's we had bath houses down the road but we never used them a strip wash down every morning and night . lots of things got recycled then as well people think it is a new thing recently done but it wasn't nothing was thown out if it could be recycled them we called it Make do and Mend . Well Shelly I bet your please the kids are off to school alitte bit of peace and quiet ? I am waiting to make a telephone call for 10 as I need to book a car to take me to the hospital on 22nd at Guildford but you have to do it quickly as there are only a few people who are available to do this and god bless them for that. see you later. love Rita xx

Morning everybody.
Thanks for the cuppa Linda.
I've enjoyed reading all your little memories of the life you had as children.
We always had a bathroom and inside loo, don't remember an ice man either. But I remember the rag man coming round the street with his horse and cart. We called him the Candy Man, he had balloons, sweets and goldfish to give to anyone who gave him old clothes. He always seemed to have an old bike on his cart as well, I bought one off him once - for sixpence.

morning All,
Blimey I must be really old ......I can remember the GAS man lighting to lamp out side of my house , he had very long stick that somehow lit the gas light and the sound of gas would go pop every time he lit it !!
I used to sit on the kerb and wait for him, then when he came in the mornings he just pulled the chain on the lamp and off it went !!
We too had baths in a tin bath, I didn't mind that as it was always put in front of the fire, nice and warm on a Friday night ,I was always the first as I was the youngest although my twin was older than me she was never allowed to go first..LOL So there were 4 of us and my poor brother was last, and had to bath in all our dirty water ..... Then the nit comb would come out and one by one had to endour this bl**dy fine comb we all 3 sisters had long hair. Then the cod liver & NHS orange juice to wash it all down !!
Oh I could go on............LOL
Shelly how Olly ? Did he keep you awake last ? ...Hope you didn't smack his bum !!
Its a bit overcast today, but might turn better later.
Rita I hope you got your transport at 10 am I just turned up at the lappy then !
Now where's our Sue ? She should be back by now.
Pauline I hope you can solve that IQ as my sister is still at it !! LOL

Marylin one of my Aunties married a Gas lighter man they went on for a long time those Gas lamps as the electric came in a street at a time. we still had wall lights Gas Mantles my Gran use to call them . I recall Dad having piles of shillings on the mantle piece incase we ran out of gas. I cannot rememeber where I saw the lamp but while in London there was still one standing not in use of course but it stood there and I said to my sister it looked so nice when you looked at the ones used now they didnt have the same character the old ones looked much better.
so what have you all been up to over the weekend anything nice. ?
I bet the babies got a lot of cuddles and kisses over the weekend.

Mo I was 15 years old when you were born. I was born in 1931 and was nearly 9 when the war broke out. I was evacuated to Wales then but became very ill and was brough home after 10 months. so I am watching the programmes on this on TV. also I was in the Land army I put my age up and was in there in about 1946 so I am looking forward to that programme as well. although I joined just after the war.
