Evening Nicky, Ed and anyone elso on our thread,

I started to watch the film last night with my hubby and the next thing it was about 2.30 am! How attractive we must have both looked...gobs open catching flys! The only thing I can remember is Denzil Washington driving this sweet little girl to school in a big black Merc, then out like a light.

No still not keen on Tom Cruise Nicky...far too weird and so short!

Hubby thought of a film that we saw years ago (you'll like this one Nicky...got Paul Newman in it) "The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean". Stacey Keach was so funny as 'Bad Bob the Albino'. It also had Victoria Principle in it too.

The weather has been dry here in north norfolk today...very dull though. We're very close to the norfolk Broads, about 8 miles from the 'Broads Capital' Wroxham. Roll on the spring.

Funnily enough I've never been a big Demi Moore fan; I don't know why.

The Denzel Washington Film with Angelina Jolie is "The Bone Collector".

Did you ever see "The Siege", where he is an FBI agent trying to hunt down a terrorist who keeps planting bombs in New York. Bruce Willis was in it too, he played a rather gung-ho colonel.

I couldn't get into the film last night - I think my brain wasn't functioning properly after a really hectic week at work.

Hi Jen,,,, and welcome to Pams film thread........... I had to chuckle when you talked about The english countryside being so beautiful...... Yes it is, but its usually raining or blowing a gale ,or both!!! Its funny i sit and wish I lived in a warmer climate....... visited Australia 25 years ago and loved it, have always wanted to go back, hopefully one day I will get there. I guess its a case of always wanting what you hav`nt got....... I live on the south coast which has one of the best sunshine records in the country, buts its still grey and dismal far too often for my liking.

Ed and Pam....... sorry have to disagree with you on the Tom Cruise interveiw last night, and I take back what i said a few days ago about him not being "my cup of tea" I thought last night he looked incredibly handsome, {sighs}and gave a really good interveiw, his first time with Johnathan Ross , and as we all know ,he can be difficult........ Agree with Scientology thing being weird, but John Travolta is also a follower, and i think hes a brilliant actor as well.

Can`t say I ve ever heard of The Martins Pam.

Denzel Washington.... havn`t seen Glory, but love the film where hes a paprapalegic ex cop, confined to bed and Angelina Jolie {rookie cop} is guided through some horrific murders by him..... name escapes me, I`m sure you`ll know it Ed.

Morgan Freeman.... loved those 2 films.....Kiss the Girls and the other one where hes the same charecter, And along came a Spider........ the one where he holds all the girls underground is really scary....................

don`t think Demi Moores had a mention yet...... Gi Jane, Ghost, Striptease, A Few good men, and the one where she has to spend the night with Robert Redford for a million dollars, and nearly wrecks her marriage to Woody Harrelson in the process ...Indecent Proposal, sure shes made a lot more ,but these are the good ones that spring to mind......I`m sure being a red bloodied male you`ll remember a few more Ed....lol

Thanks for that website - I'll take a look. I guess I just love anything set in the UK. I love the British sense of humour and the beauty of the countryside. We too loved "Hustle" and are currently enjoying "Holby Blue" series. Unfortunately, here in Oz, we don't get enough and series are often cut short. Are currently watching re-runs of "Hamish Macbeth", are also fans of "The Bill". Please keep recommendations coming. Bye for now.

There are a lot of fantastic British films from the beginnings of cinema to the present day - is there any particular era's films you are intersted in?

A couple of British films from recent years I've seen and enjoyed :

Gangster No 1 (This is quite a graphic film and not for the faint-hearted)

I don't know whether you actually mean films made by the British film industry, or films set in Britain; the James Bond films are considered British, as is Lawrence of Arabia (a fantastic film), or something quintessentially British, like "Brief Enounter".

I also like the BBC period and costume dramas - one I rmember from the 80s was "By The Sword Divided", which was set in the English Civil War.

Yes I know what you mean about Tom Cruise - I think it's the Scientology thing. I still think he's a good actor though and I really want to see Valkyrie.

No I've not seen The Martins but I'll keep my eye out for it.

I think I may give the late BBC1 film "Man on Fire" a go - it's got Denzel Washington and Christopher Walken in it. It's one I've not seen before so I'm up for something new (to me anyway!)

Speaking of Denzel Washington, has anyone ever seen "Glory" which also starred Morgan Freeman and Matthew Broderick? It was set in the American Civil War and was based on the true story of the first all-black regiment in the Union Army. Very realistic and exceedingly moving.

I really like Lee Evans, had to go out the room and come in here when I knew Tom Cruise was on, dreadful isn't it to dislike someone so much! So no Ed, didn't watch his interview.

Did you ever see The Martins with Lee Evans and Kathy Burke, very funny in places, but quite sad in others.

Evening Ed, I didn't watch Police Squad that often but yes it was funny at the end when they'd all stand still and then you'd see an eye move or something. Yes you have mentioned Gene Wilder and Richard Prior before, funny old life he had Richard Prior didn't he. My cousin Frank loves all their films, he literally cries with laughter! Also he loves the Python films too...think you have the same sense of humour!

Yes we've got Johnathan Ross on at the moment - I rarely watch him on the Film 2000 and whatever - I thought Barry Norman was much better myself.

As Lee Evans is on the show, it reminds me of a film of his called "Funny Bones" - another comedy with some really dark bits. Had Freddie "Parrot Face" Davies in it too.

Leslie Nielsen - yes it all started with a TV series called Police Squad if I'm not mistaken. Suprisingly, he used to be a straight character actor - he played the captain in the Posiedon Adventure.

Love the original Airplane film - belly laughs all the way through, especially in the control tower with Lloyd Bridges: "Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit smoking/drinking (and my favourite) sniffing glue".

Steve Martin is OK, but I wouldn't go out of my way to watch one of his films.

I think my all time favourite comedy pairing has to be Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor (I think I've mentioned their films before).

I also liked Gene Wilder in "Young Frankenstein". It had the late Madeleine Kahn in it (Lili von Schtupp in Blazing Saddles) and Marty Feldman as Igor - I loved the way his hump kept changing shoulders! Also Gene Hackman in the cameo role of the blind man who pours the boiling soup into the lap of the monster.

Think Richard Pryor's funniest film has to be either "Brewster's Millions" or "The Toy".

Do you think he's as good as Barry Norman or Parkinson at being a film critic? I must say it seems like centuries ago when Michael Parkinson was on the old Film 19.. whatever. Remember Spitting Image taking the mick out of Barry Norman and always saying after each sentence..."and why not?"

Yes Nicky it was Steve Martin who did the remake of The Father of The Bride.

Airplane, yes good wasn't it (especially when she's blowing up the autopilot!) and also Hot Shots.

Steve Martin?.......... wasn`t he the one who did the remake of Father of the Bride?........ not a patch on the original, I`m afraid i`m not very familiar with his films...... i always get him mixed yup with Leslie Neilson, as they look so similar...........just loved the original Airplane film, it still makes me chuckle today if ever its on telly. Hot Shots part Deux was good as well with Charlie Sheen, dressed as a mickey take Rambo charecter.


Pete Postlethwaite. yes a very good actor...Did either of you catch that Prison Drama he was in on tv about 6months/a year ago . it was on 5 nights running, about a young lad out drinking, meets a girl goes back to her place, and when he wakes in the morning shes dead beside him, it was really good, and Pete Postlethwaite was the man he shared his cell with while on remand, who befriended him, and sort of showed him the way........it was really good but can`t remember what it was called..... will go and have a Google....

EDIT...... It was called Criminal Justice and was on BBC1,

Yes I agree, a good film.

Just to lighten things up a bit and I can't believe I've not mentioned this one before as I love it... "Dirty Rotton Scoundrels" with Michael Caine and Steve Martin. I can find Steve Martin a bit irritating at times, but he and Michael Caine are very good in this one.
" Ruprett! you've been banging on your pots again haven't you?!" ..."Ruprett! ... Genital cuff!" So funny! If you haven't seen the film you'll think I've lost it completely.
Our son does a very good 'Take off, of Ruprett...he goes "Not Mother?" and does that dopey look. Lads are funny at times...he's 28, so he's got to grow up yet!!

Another funny Steve Martin one with the lovely late John Candy...Planes, Trains and Automobiles.
