Hi Ed, yes you're right he played a mute in it. and as you say it won him an Oscar as his character Michael I think it was. I really like that film and glad you do, it's not to everyone's taste though. Some people have said they find it a bit bleak, but it's more than just a love story it's about the Irish troubles that were going on then too.

I remember hearing somewhere that Christopher Jones' voice had to be dubbed as he couldn't get the English accent right. Of course I believe he was very unhappy in that film as he was possibly still reeling from the awful Sharon Tate murder in 1968, he was apparantly very much in love with her and even seeing her when she was with Roman Polanski.

How that bas*ard Charles Manson is still alive I don't know...but I'd better not go down that road!!

Hi Pam,

Out of the five films you've listed, I've only ever seen Ryan's Daughter. Thought it was a fantastic film - wasn't that one John Mills' only Oscar winner? I seem to remember him saying it was typical - it was the only part he played that he never spoke in and he won an Oscar!

I don't think Murder by Decree was written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The story was made for film .

Remember The House of Wax ?

Yes David.....the sound of Music a timeless classic......though the Von Trapp children must all be in their 50s now!! , such wonderful songs we had the soundtrack on LP when I was a young girl.

Don`t think Julie Andrews ever quite eclipsed that role, she was in Star a few years later, and of course got her baps out in that film with Dudley Moore in the late 70s..... not quite the actions of Maria the Nun...!!!

Yes Pam have seen Yanks many times over the years, I like the bit at the end when the girls are trying to push their way through at the Train station to say goodbye to their men {the Yanks} and they say mind out of the way shes pregnant.... and Lynne Perrie {Ivy tilsey from coronation street} shouts "so `s half the bloody town love"...... that was the downside of those dashing Yanks, the babies they left behind who never knew their fathers. I recognise all the bits you mentioned Pam, must try and see it again soon, its a beautiful film, and Richard Gere just smoulders all the way through it.........

Youv`e got a good memory David, remembering Christopher Plummer in Sherlock Holmes..

Hi David, I know that Christopher Plummer the canadian actor played Von Trapp, he also was in The Battle of Britain film playing Suzannah Yorks husband. You could well be right about him playing sherlock Holmes, I'm not to knowlable about him as an actor...now if we we're talking about Mr Purefoy I'm your gal!!!!

David Report 25 Mar 2009 17:44

I remember when The Sound of Music was released. My Mother went to see it almost every week for a couple of months

Did'nt the actor who played Baron Von Trapp also in another film play SherlocK Holmes ?

Murder by Decree it was caledl, about Jack the Ripper

That's right Nicky, you've got a good memory. It really is a smashing film. The dad played by Tony Melody says "Well we're having this though." as he holds the bottle of scotch that Richard Gere (Matt) has brought for him. The little brother makes me laugh when he calls out "Jean, the Yank's here!" So typical of kids. Also when he's getting him to try out canned fruit, very sweet. The kids loved the yanks didn't they. Remember the scene in the chippy, Fish and Chips 50 times or something similiar, everyone in the shop groans.

Great film.

Nicky, you're spot on with the year 1979.

Believe it or not Pam, Iv`e never seen Ryans Daughter.....

Yanks is a wonderful film, saw it at the cinema when it first came out, think it was about 1979......definetly pre Officer and a Gentleman days for Richard Gere, I love the bit where he bakes the cake for the girlfirends mother, and as she unwraps the box, she rolls the string up and keeps it, a sign of the times that the Yanks wern`t familiar with, being thrifty/rationing etc.....

What was it they said about them?...

Overpaid
Oversexed
and Overhere.......

and Brief Encounter such a wonderful film........., afraid I`m not familiar with the other 2.

Morning all, lovely bright day here, still very widy and chilly though.

Right here are my five films, although there's so many films that I like but these are romantic ones that get my vote...

Ryan's Daughter.
I mean you could understand why Sarah Miles character wanted to sh*g the georgous Christopher Jones...being married to boring old Robert Mitchum and his wind up gramamphone...(no that's not a euphemism!)

Yanks.
The era was portrayed so wonderfully and it's the only film where Richard Gere didn't look to bad.

Jilting Joe.
Yes a very low budget film and the outcome is blindingly obvious...but it stars James Purefoy, and he looks so handsome in it...I can't watch his scenes without smiling in a 'Matt Groening creation' kind of a way! ha ha.

Dulcima.
Carole White, John Mills and a very youthful Stuart Wilson. It was made in 1971, I was 16 and watching it evokes such lovely memories of that time. The country side is glorious and it is still an Englnd where the country side that has changed very little since the war really. Very unexpected ending! Love this film, and it's never shown on telly. I have a much loved video of it and DVD.

Brief Encounter.
Another one which I like purely for the fact it's set in a gentler time and people keep their clothes on! Celia Johnson and Trevor Howard are brilliant in it though.

Back later.

Did any of you watch Silvester Stallone in Cliffhanger. A good story well acted and ample opportunity to flex those muscles

He also took a good part in Paradise Alley playing the flabby brother of a wrestler.

Good choices Ed........but Blade Runner lost me in the first half hour........ saw it at the cinema when it first came out, think it was probably more of a mans film.....

Terminator was on tv the other night OH watched it ...AGAIN!!, couldn`t believe how long ago it was., Arnie at his best before he got in to politics!!.

2001 a space oddesey..... must agree brilliant musical score.

Be intresting to see after a while which actor/actress pops up the most.......Bruce Willis defo in the lead at the moment with 3 films........

Nicky

Night all...

2001: A Space Oddyssey (great music - fantastic sequence at the end ...)

The Day the Earth Stood Still - now Gort was what I call a ROBOT

The Terminator - I'll be back!!

To try and get back on to the films.......... why don`t we all take it in turns to list our favourite{in no particular order} films in various different Genres of our own choice?......

I`ll start off with top 5 action films

Casino Royale ...Daniel Craigs version....say no more .......

Cliffhanger....... Sly Stallone as a daredevil mountaineer

The River Wild... Meryl Streep at her best, and Kevin Bacon as a very sinister criminal on the run.

Armageddon.....Bruce Willis saves the world, with a strong supporting cast.

Die Hard.......Bruce Willis again {sorry} and the brilliant Alan Rickman, battling for supremecy in a skyscraper full of hostages.

leave your comments and add your own in any genre.....

Nicky

Please don`t think I`m high jacking your thread Pam....just trying to get back in film mode.......

Have we mentioned Reach for the sky? You know I don't think we have. A wonderful film, with kenneth more brilliant as Douglas Bader. Thinking about it a bit more I've a feeling in my water (as my nan would say) that we have mentioned it on our thread.

Well if we have, it's worth another shout!

Hi Nicky, yes it was really wintery here today! We're not far from the coast and nice sandy beach...about four miles. Last week it was very mild and I walked along the there with my daughter and her boyfriend. Amazing how the weather changes in a few days.

Yes it was a good film, and they don't make them like that anymore do they. I often watch the afternoon film as I work nights occasionally as you know.

Pam.☺

Winter in Norfolk today!!! you must live in the wrong part of the country Pam.....

We`ve had a beautiful day...wall to wall sunshine but a bit breezy, often is though being on the coast, walked the dog down along the seafront this morning, .....nothing like a good walk on the Prom when the weathers good.

Caught a bit of that channel four film earlier Pam......know what you mean .......when they all speak as though they`re in an elocution lesson.....!!.

Yes Ed. I loved I Robot as well, but like you can`t take to his comedies.
