Usherettes Jean........now theres a blast from the past, can`t remember the last time I was shown to my seat in a cinema.......certainly not for a couple of decades.......!!!!!

We have a lovely little cinema in our neck of the wood. Interval, usherettes, ice creams. Ohhh a proper night out!

Everyone wold agree that Robert de Niro and Al Pacino are excellent in gangster films..

But little Joe Pesci is in a category of his own.
Ive liked him enormously in JFK Raging Bull, The Goodfellows etc

Unfortunatly Pam our "theatre" isn`t an old fashioned sea side one....I should think it was built in the 60s, it used to have a bar and resteraunt attached to it and was all owned by the council, my 21st birthday party was held in the restaraunt in 1982..........but nowadays its a Harvester resteaurant , and before that Brewsters family eaterie complete with Ballpit!.... the Harvesters really popular as its right on the seafront, looking out over the greensward, but can`t say i`ve been there myself, though very welcoming for all the day trippers that arrive by the Coach load every summer.

Worthing {about 8 miles away} has a beautiful old cinema also on the seafront called the Dome.. { google it, its a lovely building]..they`ve spent a fortune doing it up lately and it was used for some of the scenes in the film Wish you Were Here....don`t know if you remember it, was about a very "naughty" young girl in a 50s /60s seaside town, who swore like a trooper and shocked all around her, she had an affair with the much older friend of her father, and is a bit of a "coming of age" movie with a diffference.......it starred the Excellent Emily Lloyd , daughter of Roger lloyd Pack of Trigger fame from Only fools and horses, if you hav`nt seen it before I highly reccomend it, it really is quite funny.

I actually can`t see t makes any difference wether you go to the cinema alone or with someone...its not as though you talk to them during the film, and anyway it means you keep all your sweets to yourself, instead of having to share....lol

Hi nicky that sounds so nice where you are and if I was nearer I'd come with you. Films are so much better on the Big Screen. We have a small cinema about twelve miles up the coast, it's like stepping back in time, and we don't use it as much as we should. It's like lot's of things I guess you take them for granted, we have the beach and the Norfolk Broads on our doorstep...and we hardly ever go on the river...mind you hubby does work on the broads...bit like a busman's holiday, but we get the boat free!!

Do you know what I'm going to make sure I make the effort to go to the cinema even on my own, as you say nicky as long as you don't have to rub shoulders with a stranger...mmmm wonder if there's a James Purefoy look alike near here...no doubt it!

Its ashame Ed when you can`t get to see the films at the Cinema that you want to, so many times i`ve watched a film on SKY , for the first time, and instantly thought

, I bet that would have been good on the big screen..........

going to the cinema on my own dosn`t bother me in the least, as long as i don`t have to rub shoulders with a total stranger......

In my seaside town, we have a "Theatre" very small, all the local amatuer dramatics groups put on shows there, and it also doubles up as a cinema... until a few years ago it was hard plastic seating, [been to watch eldest daughter preforming there over the years, you couldn`t feel your backside by the time the show had finished!!} but they have now refitted it with proper cinema seats....its not quite like your UCI or Odeon multiplex, {which in my case are 13 and 20 miles away respectively} buts its cheap and its cheerful, and fine for me on my own................. some Wednesday mornings they do an 11am screening of the film showing that week...{usually about 6 weeks after its release date} and that timing fits in prefectly with my work hours, so next Wednesday i`m off to see The Young Victoria.... it takes me less than 5 minutes to drive there, I park for free on the road, and the ticket costs £3.40 and includes a cup of tea or coffee, at todays prices for everything, I think its a very good deal, only wish I`d found out about the morning performances earlier....... but like most people ,we never realise whats going on in our own town right under our noses.....

I know exactly how you feel Nicky - I seldom get to see my kind of film at the cinema. Although I really really did enjoy the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (I was weaned on the Narnia books), but I never got to see Prince Caspian.

I feel very "odd" going to the cinema on my own, and since I moved out of London I rarely get to meet up with like-minded friends to go the the cinema.

Oh i have to disagree Helen, I love going to the cinema, but since i started my family 21 years ago the trips to see "my" sort of films have been very few, but have seen every trashy kids film you can think of......spice world the Movie, The Powerpuff girls {must have been one of the worse ever} not to mention ALL the Disney re-releases and countless others. I personally don`t think films have the same impact on a smaller screen.

I have just returned from a long trip to New Zealand.....and I watched 12 films on the various flights, excluding the ones I watched again as I had fallen asleep before the endings.....I am up to date with current films but going to the cinema turns me off right now!!!!

Yes Nicky, that film about the pilot shot down in Serbia was called Behind Enemy Lines and it was on the other night - I watched it and it was very good!

Whilst I think Jennifer Aniston is a good actress, she's not really my cup of tea - I don't know what it is but there's something there that doesn't do it for me. Milla Jovovich is my pash as you may know, closely followed by Patsy Kensit who's just got married }:-( and Rachel Ticotin (when she was a bit younger in Total Recall).

My favourite Clint Eastwood western is The Outlaw Josey Wales, although I do like High Plains Drifter too. I'm a bit like you David, I could watch Clint Eastwood westerns back-to-back all day if I was given the chance. I'm not too sure Unforgiven was a remake, but I do recall reading somewhere that Eastwood waited several years before he made it (he was also the director), because he wanted to wait until he was old enough to play the lead role.

Not sure about that David, but i suspect Ed or Mo may know the answer to that one.

Agree Ed, Owen Wilson does seem to have come out of nowhere, I think the first film I saw him in first was in a film where he was dropped behind enemy lines in Serbia during the War in the 90`s....... actualyy I think it may have been called Behind Enemy lines..........he was very good in it.....

Can`t believe you didn`t mention Jennifer Anniston......... every mans dream girl, I think shes lovely, very girl next door type, who appeals to both men and women.

Clint Eastwoods spaghetti westerns being raised again......... I think we all love then, and of course the music score is excellent for them as well.

MO the RG....... nothing wrong with the ugly ones, I have a bit of a weird taste in men myself, {and don`t get Pam started on James Purefoy} lol my friend from years ago thought I had a thing about men with big noses, as I was so in to Roger Daltrey and Rod Stewart in the 70s........

Yes hate to say I told you so but ...

There was one girl in the cinema when I saw it who was inconsolable (sp), she was really sobbing heavily.

I think the humour throughout the film that gets you on such a high actually made the sad bit so much more upsetting. Like I said, I just about kept myself under control (I did have to wipe away a tear or two).

I really like Owen Wilson as an actor: Shanghai Noon and Shanghai Knights with Jackie Chan, as Jedediah in Night at the Museum (and 2 as well!), Meet the Parents and Meet the Fockers, he's one of those actors who has suddely 'sprung up' from nowhere.

David, I agree about Lee van Cleef, a great actor. I remember him in HIgh Noon - I believe he doesn't have a single word in that film. I also remember him in the 1980s TV series called 'The Master' in which he played an American ninja! Was a good crack if you like martial arts films. And of course the spaghetti westerns - I thought he was the perfect foil to Clint Eastwood in them.
