On doing further research the "Knighted" surname appears NOT to be a direct line of mine the middle name of B is not as expected! - boo hoo lol
Never mind. But there are still loads of research to do on one of my surnames.

Mark, perhaps it belonged to their father originally?

Susan,

In the London Gazette, I found a record of my GG-grandfather dissolving his Hull-based plumbing business, in 1892. We knew he moved to London by 1901 and now I have a clue about when and why.
In spite of the firm being called "and Son" the other named partner was actually his brother.

VERY useful site this.

Mark

Anthony,

Close Adobe 8.

At the search results page, use a mouse-wheel (or centre-button) click on the "View pdf" button.

You will see a new tab open up in your browser but you'll still be viewing the results page. Click on the new tab to view it.

Could this be my Edward Cook the Jockey?

Notice is hereby given, that the partnership lately subsisting between us the undersigned, Edward Cook and John Coppin, as Job and Riding Masters, at the Royal Crystal Palace Stables, Upper Norwood in the County of Surrey, under the firm Cook and Coppin, has been this day desolved by mutual consent; and that all debts due and owing to or by the late firm, will be received and paid by the said Edward Cook -- As witness our hands this 20th day of November, 1882.

Hmm... curiouser and curiouser (his wife, Sarah, is listed as a Widow in 1881 but I've not yet found a death for him)

nudging as I think its worthwhile.

Tina

But will add that three of the surnames in my tree are Mules, Miller and Beer. You can imagine the tripe that comes up regarding horses, donkeys and the like and then flour millers and then breweries!!!! But my other unusual surname has come up trumps but needs careful looking at - might have a couple of knighthoods!

Glad you found something Leanne and Heather I am still grinning about the ones I have found, so know how it feels :-))))

I am afraid I stumbled upon it when I entered one of my names Heather......It wasn't one of mine after all but made facinating reading especially as there were so many in just the one year.

I'll try to find it again but there are so many pages that unless you have someone who may have changed their name it may be quite a trawl without using the search engine.

Will PM you Ann and see if I can help

Hi Julia,

I suppose whatever works best for you. It has been trial and error for me too. At first I just entered a name and we all know what happens by now lol. Too many irrelevant hits with too little time to look at them all.

I have written some tips further back on the thread but I am sure that once you play and get used to all the boxes and what each one does you will find what suits you best.

So far I have just added Full name and area in the middle search box ( Exact Phrase ) and also sometimes used the date filter to search within a framework of years. As yet I have not been interested in more recent documents.

My way is for those who have time to spare I am afraid. Perhaps someone else can add to the tips now that they have time to browse.

Hope this helps

Hello Susan with numbers. Although I have been able to bring this site up, I do not, according to what others have found, think I am using it to its full potential.
When the site appears on the screen, which title going down the page is it best to click onto, for best results.
Many Thanks

Hi Tracey,

You may have your popups blocked.

When at first you click on the PDF button another window should pop up. On my PC there is first a warning that I say ok to or delete then at the top of the bar there is a warning that you are about to download from a website do you want to continue....click ok to this.

Just a thought though for any newbies.....You will need adobe pdf reader to view the images. This can be downloaded free directly from their website at adobe.com.

Update : I see you have sorted it :-))))

Ann,

It must be so annoying not to be able to find more On your line :-(......I should have made a note of the pages....will do the next time I see them......But just add Navy or Army or even use the filter drop down for WW1 or WW2, this may help.

Oh dear....not a good day then ?:-(
