Susan: Yes ive been searching under the surname (Italian) and knew that a lot of them changed their surname to (French) around the 1940's.
Ive just discovered that two became Kents and one became a Wilford....two surnames we would never have thought to look under!

Searching for Donviglio Elvio Lazaro (Italian) is fairly easy...he became Peter Richard Kent though, which is a little more common!

Tina

Hehehe is not good enough lol...am dying to know at least 'some' details :-)))

Hi Rita

I havent bothered using any of the years and dates as I may miss some.....use the middle box where it says Exact words...enter full name or add area etc

Edit:...mind you, it may be a good idea to use the dates filter if you are getting too many hits and want to narrow it down to certain years.

I hope you find some Di.... let us know if you do.:-).

Lol McAnne.....now you know why I am so excited.

I am even more excited now……..I have been searching for the death of one of my Oh’s forever and found it on a ships list of unpaid wages to seamen…..
THE LONDON GAZETTE, MAY 3, 1910. 3105
ROYAL NAVY AND ROYAL MARINES, UNCLAIMED BALANCES
OF PAY, ETC.
Applications from persons supposing themselves entitled as next of kin, or legal representatives
should be addressed; -by letter, to " The Inspector of Seamen's Wills, Admiralty, London, S.W."

Hmm! I wonder if anyone claimed his £2- 9s and 10d

If you know the name of the ship just add it to the name in the search box

a few more too.....sheesh...there is not enough time in the day

There are also list and lists of armed forces....not just the higher ranks...all with numbers.....Followed one's army career right to the top until his death

Just found one of my Oh's Uncles who we knew had died but didn't realise he had got an honourable mention as we couldn't find his papers on ancestry.

Just back in the bankruptcy courts now finding some hidden family secrets :-)))....brings yer down to earth lol.

Susan9363343 Report 1 Oct 2008 15:30

Sounds intriguing Kitty.... is it favourable? :-))))

Hmmm! Sue....Just had a look......methinks you may want to put in a few first names to narrow it down a bit or I can see us sending out a search party for you lol

It's interesting that just one paper can have had so many results for more than just the odd few .....I hope some brick walls have been broken today..... I sometimes feel a bit greedy when it just seems to be me having the luck..:-))))..still haven't found my Irish fellah though.......ooooo just remembered...the Befast Times is also on line for those who are interested.

Thanks, I've found loads! But HOW do I get to view the results? For some reason the pdf download isn't working properly for me.

Well, not very exciting but I have found two of my Uncles had the ISM (Imperial service Medal) given to all civil servants with long service.

But I wonder if I am searching properly. Susan, where are you finding the lists of service personnel?
Will keep looking but got interrupted when OH dropped the new kitchen blind he was putting up onto a china container in the kitchen (belonged to my Mum but not valuable). didn't do it a lot of good!!!

Hi Tracey,

You may have your popups blocked.

When at first you click on the PDF button another window should pop up. On my PC there is first a warning that I say ok to or delete then at the top of the bar there is a warning that you are about to download from a website do you want to continue....click ok to this.

Just a thought though for any newbies.....You will need adobe pdf reader to view the images. This can be downloaded free directly from their website at adobe.com.

Update : I see you have sorted it :-))))

Ann,

It must be so annoying not to be able to find more On your line :-(......I should have made a note of the pages....will do the next time I see them......But just add Navy or Army or even use the filter drop down for WW1 or WW2, this may help.

Oh dear....not a good day then ?:-(

Hello Susan with numbers. Although I have been able to bring this site up, I do not, according to what others have found, think I am using it to its full potential.
When the site appears on the screen, which title going down the page is it best to click onto, for best results.
Many Thanks
Julia in Derbyshire

Susan9363343 Report 1 Oct 2008 17:28

Hi Julia,

I suppose whatever works best for you. It has been trial and error for me too. At first I just entered a name and we all know what happens by now lol. Too many irrelevant hits with too little time to look at them all.

I have written some tips further back on the thread but I am sure that once you play and get used to all the boxes and what each one does you will find what suits you best.

So far I have just added Full name and area in the middle search box ( Exact Phrase ) and also sometimes used the date filter to search within a framework of years. As yet I have not been interested in more recent documents.

My way is for those who have time to spare I am afraid. Perhaps someone else can add to the tips now that they have time to browse.

Hope this helps

Susan
