. Which is heavier: a pound of gold or a pound of feathers?

Well they say the answer is Feathers, as gold is measured in 12oz troy pounds and Feathers are measured in 16oz Avoirdupois pounds, I always said they weighed the same!

There is an old joke "Which is heavier, a pound of lead or a pound of feathers?" Of course, they weigh the same. But if you said "Which is heavier, a ounce of gold or a ounce of feathers?", then you could claim that the gold is measured in troy and the feathers in avoirdupois, and so the gold is indeed heavier. But a troy pound of gold is lighter than a pound (avoirdupois) of feathers!

weell done those who said the correct answer was bird seed!

this weeks brain teaser for OUR homework is....

a man came to a river across which there was only one bridge. unfortunately the man could not swim and was deathly afraid of bridges so refused to cross water on one. there were no boats or other forms of mechanical means of transportation. how did the man get across the river??

Did he have a horse
he could then ride across

...He could of done what a beaver does..and build a dam..across the river..( I think thats what beavers do..?!..may be thinking of another animal)..at least he wont get swept away..as he could do with a raft..
Alternateltively..he could wait for St Christopher to come along to carry hin across!

helicopter? LOL.

Afraid of bridges, couldn't swim... I'm sure I've heard this one before. To be fair, it didn't mention any trees so... hmmz. Making a raft would be the obvious one of course.

Bird seed, clever, these teasers are very good for getting our brains going aren't they?!

What if he just walked across as it does not say that the water was deep.

LancsLass

LancsLass Report 23 Sep 2008 18:50

....or the river was frozen so he walked

Hoobity

Hoobity Report 23 Sep 2008 18:53

The question says he couldn't swim so it has to be there was water in the river but he could wait till winter and cross when the river is frozen like lancs lass has mentioned.

As other's have said, it doesn't say how deep or how wide.

I'm laughing because I some how missed where Jen said about the horse *rolls eyes at self* And I was so excited when I came up with that. LOL I think the clue is in the mechanical bit. That's a very specific way of putting it.
