	As other's have said, it doesn't say how deep or how wide. I'm laughing because I some how missed where Jen said about the horse rolls eyes at self And I was so excited when I came up with that. LOL I think the clue is in the mechanical bit. That's a very specific way of putting it.

	The question says he couldn't swim so it has to be there was water in the river but he could wait till winter and cross when the river is frozen like lancs lass has mentioned.
