I have to agree with Jeanette, Joanna's post did come over as condescending...to me at least. Also pronounciation of words can depend on the accent.

Hmmm.....agreeing with a Yorkshire lass....canny be having that pmsl

I think you've got off quite lightly Joanna considering how condescending you were in your first post. We have all been quite civil and polite in comparison

Joanna.... I cannot see any hurtful or
personal comments on this thread...
just people airing their own opinions in a respectful manner.

The reason I bought up the subject of accents is because cockneys drop their aiches etc.not because we are lazy but because it is part of our accent. Bob Hoskins has never pretended to be anything he is not and I admire him for that.

Ann... I hope I have not offended you because that was the last thing I intended.

I honestly believe that cockney speak is in fact an accent and not lazy speak :)

No one is being personal that I can see,all are expressing an opinon,,,,,,,,,you have laid a personal infringement on how people speak, all thats being said is regional accents all sound different,so if that makes them not speaking eloquent Queens spoken English,,,,,so be it,

But thats how a lot of Londoners talk Joanna they do drop their H's and leave off the G's its part of the accent.

Joanna.

I cannot see any personal or hurtful comments, like yourself people are only expressing an opinion as is their right.

The subject you mentioned was bound to spark many replies, accents do affect the way words are pronounced.

As for Jane Horrocks, she's an actress and has probably gone out of her way to "speak in a posher manner" than her normal accent would normally be spoken otherwise she would have been typecast as a "northerner".

No, Ann, you were not mistaken.
Regional accents were not the issue.
My parents were both from Lancashire and their families came from Yorkshire and Wales - as do my in-laws.
My Dad had a strong Bolton
accent - just like Jane Horrocks, who does one of the Tesco ads - and does it perfectly.
And, as someone on another thread has said, what a pity things cannot be debated on here without resorting to being personal and hurtful.

Hi Jean - I didn't read it as Joanne criticising his accent, I took it that she was criticising his sloppy pronunciation - I couldn't agree more that accents and fantastic, I have a Welsh accent myself and am very proud of it - perhaps I did misinterpret this thread, in which case I'll step out of this thread cos obviously I've got it all wrong

If they pronounced everything properly then they wouldnt have a regional accent...so criticising how someone drops 'H''s is criticising someones accent !

init?

Just an idea but if the way the celebrities speak annoy you so much maybe you should use 888 subtitles then you wont have to hear them.

Just seen your post Ann. Of course Joanne is criticising Bob Hoskin's accent cos that is how he speaks.

Jean Durant

Jean Durant Report 17 Mar 2008 13:24

For goodness sake....

Bob Hoskins is a cockney (which for the uneducated means born in London) same as me. It is called an accent.

Because I drop my aitches and don't sound g at the end of a word doesn't mean I am not as good as the next person no matter what job I do.

I am proud of my accent and wouldn't mind betting Bob is too.

A regional accent is a form of identity.
