No, Ann, you were not mistaken.
Regional accents were not the issue.
My parents were both from Lancashire and their families came from Yorkshire and Wales - as do my in-laws.
My Dad had a strong Bolton
accent - just like Jane Horrocks, who does one of the Tesco ads - and does it perfectly.
And, as someone on another thread has said, what a pity things cannot be debated on here without resorting to being personal and hurtful.

Joanna.

I cannot see any personal or hurtful comments, like yourself people are only expressing an opinion as is their right.

The subject you mentioned was bound to spark many replies, accents do affect the way words are pronounced.

As for Jane Horrocks, she's an actress and has probably gone out of her way to "speak in a posher manner" than her normal accent would normally be spoken otherwise she would have been typecast as a "northerner".

No one is being personal that I can see,all are expressing an opinon,,,,,,,,,you have laid a personal infringement on how people speak, all thats being said is regional accents all sound different,so if that makes them not speaking eloquent Queens spoken English,,,,,so be it,

Thank you for that, Joan!
I could not have put it better myself.

Joanna.... I cannot see any hurtful or
personal comments on this thread...
just people airing their own opinions in a respectful manner.

The reason I bought up the subject of accents is because cockneys drop their aiches etc.not because we are lazy but because it is part of our accent. Bob Hoskins has never pretended to be anything he is not and I admire him for that.

Ann... I hope I have not offended you because that was the last thing I intended.

I honestly believe that cockney speak is in fact an accent and not lazy speak :)

I think you've got off quite lightly Joanna considering how condescending you were in your first post. We have all been quite civil and polite in comparison

I have to agree with Jeanette, Joanna's post did come over as condescending...to me at least. Also pronounciation of words can depend on the accent.

Hmmm.....agreeing with a Yorkshire lass....canny be having that pmsl

It is the rich variety of local dialects which makes our language so interesting.

I remember going on a week's course in London in the 1970's with the B Bank I worked for.

I was from Liverpool, but only had a slight accent as I was a 'posh' scouser. They they couldn't understand why I didn't sound like the Liver Birds.

There was a girl from Yarmouth in Norfolk who sounded like Pam Ayers - she was seriously fanciable, I'll tell you...!

We had another girl from North Wales who had such a thick welsh accent we could hardly understand her. She was embarassed by this at first.

Another was broad Yorkshire and there was a lad from London who spoke Queens English.

After that week no one ever thought to judge anyone by their accent. It was the person behind it that mattered.

I think they did this sort of mix deliberately, but it did prove a point.

The experience was absolutely magic and ever since I have had a fascination with local dialects.

I personally think its sad how we are LOSING our local accents and dialect...so anyone who speaks with one, and does it with pride is fine by me

I have to say I think Jamie Olivers style of speech is accent not mispronounciation. I like the way Bob Hoskins speaks......he reminds me of my uncle who speaks in the same way lol.

I can't bear the recent habit of some teenagers (I've seen them on Eastenders and heard them on the tube the odd time I visit London) who say arksed instead of asked...... that grates on me...... as someone that lived Middlesex and visited London often in my younger days this seems to be a relatively new thing and I think it's an affectation. However.....maybe it's just me getting old lol xx
