Sister In Law?

Hi
I wondered if anyone would know if 'Sister In Law' meant anything other than how we view it today back in 1890??

I have traced ancestors on the 1891 census and she is listed as the head's Sister In Law but I cannot trace any connection...... (they could of course have been fibbing!!)

Here is the census:
1891 England Census
about Thomas Elliott
Name: Thomas Elliott
Age: 56
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1835
Relation: Head
Gender: Male
Where born: Buckinghamshire, England

Civil Parish: Limehouse
Ecclesiastical parish: St John
Town: London
County/Island: London
Country: England

Street address:

Occupation:

Condition as to marriage:

Education:

Employment status: View Image

Registration district: Stepney
Sub-registration district: Limehouse
ED, institution, or vessel: 3
Neighbors: View others on page
Household Members: Name Age
Ann Beasley 8/12
Minnie Beasley 15
Rebecca Beasley 32
Thomas Elliott 56
Sybil Taylor 8

Thomas's wife died in 1886 and was called Betsy but I cannot trace a marriage for them and so i'm unsure of her maiden name.

In 1901 Thomas changes his name to Thomas Beasley and is living at the same address as in 1891 (again no marriage for Rebecca or Thomas)

Can anyone else see any connection between Thomas Elliott and Rebecca Beasley (born Sarah Rebecca Beasley)???

Any help most appreciated

I believe Sister in Law was often used in place of step sister.
Do you have the earlier census?

Thanks for helping.

Reg - I think it more likely that the Betsy could be Rebecca's Aunt Betsy (Elizabeth) - Her father sister as the ages more or less match but again I cannot trace any marriage.

Note the Minnie Bealy on the 1881 - The Minnie Beasley shown on the 1891 is Rebecca's daughter as I have her BC (Father unknown and Rebecca Unmarried)

BVRI is British Vital Records Index, a set of 16 cd's that you purchase from LDS Church through the Familysearch site. They're extracted from parish records so are reliable.
Glad I could help.

From FreeBMD:

Marriages Dec 1854 (99%)
Astling Thomas Leighton Buzzard 3b 907 Scan available - click to view
Elliott Thomas Leighton B 3b 907 Scan available - click to view
Green Eliza Leighton Buzzard 3b 907

I checked Ancestry BMDs. Betsey shows on there - twice - once as Betsey Beesley and once as Betsy Beesley. I suggest, if you're planning to order the marriage cert not putting her first name on the form. Maybe just use his name.

I have to say, Wendy, that I don't recommend buying them. You have to be really lucky to get a hit. I've never been able to find one of my family on them.
However, go to Familysearch.
Click on "Order/Download Products" on Blue Bar at top.
Click on "Software & Databases"
Click on "Vital Records Indexes"
It quotes $20 US but I believe it's quite a bit more with postage & handling.

This link shows "local distribution centres" plus phone numbers (3 in UK).
http://www.ldscatalog.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/LDSDomestic?storeId=10151&langId=-1&page=Europe

$20 is only about a tenner, so if you can get it with minimal postage it sounds worth it if it save just one wasted journey to a distant records office.
