There is a story within our family that my great grandfather and his family went to Canada, didn't like it and came back. I believe it was between 1881 and 1890. Where do I start looking ?

You could try the 1881 Canada census, free, at familysearch.org
and the 1881 British census too

Joan, I have them on the 1881 UK census so it would be after that.

You have to pay for records, but you could start here (just to see if they have anything, and then look elsewhere for free information). (Hope that makes sense.)

I've bought records from this site before, and they give excellent service.
