Does anyone know if Ginny is a name in its own right, or an abreviation for something? |

My mum had an aunt by marriage called "Gin" but had no idea what her real name was. After much digging, I discovered that the aunt was really Elizabeth Jane, who was known as "Jennie" as a little girl (judging my the 1901 census), which must have turned into "Ginnie" (the name one of my mum's cousins knew the woman as) which then got shortened to "Gin". |

My mother was Jeanette - but always called Ginny by her family. I thought maybe it was the Somerset accent that made Jenny sound like Ginny. |
