I am trying to help someone unravel their tree but we keep coming up against surname changes.

Sorry about vague names but I don't know who is still alive...initial letters only used.

For instance
A child Percy was registered with surname 'B'....no father mentioned on cert. Mother Susan B.

4 years later, Susan married a man with surname 'A'

Percy married with surname A.....giving his stepfather's name as his father....I don't think he was but I can accept that Percy thought so.

The very next year Percy and his wife registered their son ....with surname B.
The child's mother was the informant, signing with surname B.

Why a surname change within a year, then continue to live...and later have a 2nd marriage as a widower A?

Thank you for your thoughts.

The son ( surname B) born the year after his parents married has been sought but there are no leads. Last heard of as a young child.
GRO does not record a marriage or death.
Perhaps he moved abroad?

Maybe we should look for him with surname A.....unfortunately an all too common surname to search.
