It is quite possible that the explanation given by the GRO is correct, it did happen back then. I have looked fro a marriage and a death and can't find either. |

As you have found both of them in 1851, there is no problem about going back.............they should be on 1841 census.......... |

HI SAM, I THINK THIS WOULD PREVENT ME FROM GOING BACK FURTHER BECAUSE I CANT BE REALLY SURE FOR CERTAIN THAT I HAVE THE CORRECT JAMES AS THERE WAS QUITE A FEW OF THEM IN THE AREA, I FELT IF I HAD THEIR MARRIAGE CERT OR THE DEATH, I WOULD KNOW FOR SURE WHO HIS PARENTS WERE!! I HAVE ALL OF HANNAH'S BACKGROUND SO SHE IS NOT A PROBLEM. |

What is his occupation on 1851? Does it tally with the birth cert? |

As long as you have their birth certs and therefore know their parents then you can go back further. You could look to see if William married someone else at another time, and a death dert at another time. Shelagh |

Sorry I meant James not William. If you live in London maybe you could visit the Guild of Cordwainers. A few of my ancestors had this occupation. Shelagh |

REGGIE - THERE WAS A BLANK IN THE 1851 CENSUS FOR HIS OCCUPATION... INTERESTINGLY "CORDWAINERS WALK" WAS JUST A COUPLE OF STREETS AWAY FROM WHERE HE LIVED WITH HIS PARENTS - PEHAPS HE MADE THAT ONE UP TOO.. |
