Trying to find a marriage without much luck

Hi All

I'm trying to find a marriage of Mary Elizabeth Snart (correct spelling!). She was born in Rutland in 1869 and by 1881 had moved with her family to Kirkby in Ashfield Notts.

In 1891 she is living with her parents Thomas and Elizabeth Snart in Kirkby and she is now married aged 21 and her name is Mary E Cutts. There is no husband with her and she doesn't have children so I presume she is recently married.

I can't find a marriage anywhere for a Mary Snart to an unknown Cutts. I wonder what to do next?

Interestingly in 1901 she is still Mary E Cutts and is living with an Alfred Walton as his housekeeper and she has a baby Alfred W Cutts who is Alfred Waltons natural son. I would love to find out who her husband was and what happened to him.

Thankyou

Carole xx

I'll bet this is her:

Marriages Jun 1887
MEAKIN Harriet Basford 7b 303
Snart Elizabeth Basford 7b 303
Welsh Zaccheus Basford 7b 303

The consistent use of her middle name/initial could be an indication she went by her middle name.

Let's see whether we can find the mistranscribed groom for that page ...

Actually, it looks like there's an untranscribed husband.

A search for marriages Jun 1887 Basford gives results that jump from Bush to Lauder, alphabetically. I'll do a quick check of the image for Cutts.

James Nathaniel CUTTS, Basford, vol. 7b, p. 303.

Looks like your man.

Its James Nathaniel Cutts.

Sorry Kathryn!

Great minds, always. ;)

He has a namesake in 1891:

Name: James Nat Cutts
Age: 11/12
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1890
Relation: Son
Father's Name: George
Gender: Male
Where born: Kirkby in Ashfield

but I haven't spotted him for sure yet.

That household is interesting, though:

Elizabeth Burton 38 - housekeeper, married
George Catts 39 - coal miner, married
Elizabeth Cutts 3
James Nat Cutts 11/12
Rebecca Cutts 4

I wonder whether James Nathaniel wasn't calling himself George.

Kathryn

Thankyou so much for that. I found Elizabeth Snart but on FreeBMD nothing came up for Cutts that matched. I will have another look, thankyou.

No SNART in the list for Sept 1888 Basford (which seems to be fully transcribed). Must be the first one.

(This was in response to another good possibility, missing brides in the list in question; I'll leave it here for the record for ruling-out purposes.)

The CUTTS isn't transcribed yet, Carole.

If you search for marriages, no name, Basford, Jun 1887, you'll see how it jumps -- and the two names preceding Lauder are marked with red crosses as being new additions. So they're still working on the transcription for that quarter.

I tend to forget how some things from that period still aren't transcribed. If your Mary Elizabeth's surname had started with a letter from F to K, she wouldn't have shown up either!

Kathryn, I checked the image on Ancestry, but had to go the long way round as addition at bottom of page throws it out.
