"paid for his education" - so was he privately educated? At what school? That should be a way forward - if you can find records to prove this man you suspect of being the father paid for his education. But he entered as a private in the army? Id have thought if he were privately educated he would have got a commission? |

Thanks for this. Please can you let me know how you found all of this info on tna. I looked at that site earlier and couldn't work out where to search. As I said previously this is all new to be so am no doubt making mistakes and misising stuff. |

You can send for his service record from the army records office it cost about £30 |

If you great-grandfather served beyond 1921 his records will still be with the Army Records, see the veterans website, all the information is there. |

So have you got his birth certificate or his marriage cert? And they give no fathers name? If there is no name on those documents then I doubt his military record would give one. |

The military records would have the name of his next of kin. As his parents were not married, that would be his mother.........or, if he was married, his wife. |
