What was his mother's name? Where was he born?

My g grandfather was 23 when he got married which was on 31 Jan 1920. So he must have been born 1897 ish.

Re his education, I am assuming that it was just so that he had a better start than needing to go into service as his mother did. He must have been fairly well educated as he ended up as a major in the RAOC.

I had no luck on ancestry hope you have more?

"paid for his education" - so was he privately educated? At what school? That should be a way forward - if you can find records to prove this man you suspect of being the father paid for his education. But he entered as a private in the army? Id have thought if he were privately educated he would have got a commission?

Unfortunately the medals card, though nice to have wont give the detail you are hoping to find.

Give us his birth year in case you missed him on ancestry - there are SO many with that name.

Thanks for this. Please can you let me know how you found all of this info on tna. I looked at that site earlier and couldn't work out where to search. As I said previously this is all new to be so am no doubt making mistakes and misising stuff.

You can send for his service record from the army records office it cost about £30

because he served after 1920 his records will not be on Ancestry

he may have been given another army number when his regiment went from AOC to RAOC so you can find his medal card on the national archives but it will have a different regimental number

Heather - I have my g grandfathers marriage certificate. He was married in 1920 ( 31 Jan) to Lily Adeline Payton at the church of st peter the great in Worcester. their residence at the time of marriage was 100 Cavendish St (presumably worcester). by the way the marriage certificate does not give his dads name etc. However I have learnt from my family that the parents of the son that fathered my g grandfather acknowledged his existence and paid for his education.


I also have my nans birth certificate (Beryl Doris Ives) dob 9.10.22. On this certificate her dad states that he was a serjeant in the RAOC and gives the number 7574710. My name was born in a british station hospoital in Kirkee India.

I am new to searching my family tree so may well be doing something daft in my searching but all help very much appreciated.

If you great-grandfather served beyond 1921 his records will still be with the Army Records, see the veterans website, all the information is there.

So have you got his birth certificate or his marriage cert? And they give no fathers name? If there is no name on those documents then I doubt his military record would give one.

Do you have those certificates? When/where was he born/married?

The military records would have the name of his next of kin. As his parents were not married, that would be his mother.........or, if he was married, his wife.

I am trying to find out some information on my great grandfather. I have looked at the military records for WW1 on ancestry and have no joy even though I have his unique regimental number ( James Hart - no 7574710 RAOC) Does anyone have any tips on how best to find out information. I am hoping that the military records would provide details of his father as we don't know who he is. His mother my g g grandmother was in service and my g grandfather was the result of a liason between her and the son of her boss.
