Ive researched a marriage on FreeBMD, and I am confused about the results.
This was the only result on a search for the marriage of Thomas and Margaret Town:
Demsey Margaret
Hargreaves James
Town Thomas
Towns Thomas
Ward Mary Ann

Who are the other people on the list?
and does this mean my Margaret's maiden name is Demsey?
Any help appreciated.

Hi when you get a list like this it shows the person you are looking for ie Thomas and will show any other marriages at this time on the same page.Margaret would have been down in her maiden name.
If you are certain this is your Thomas and you have knowledge that he married a Margaret then you do have correct record.
The way to be 100% is to obtain this record and get the vol number etc and order the cert and see if the Thomas listed is the correct 1.

Yes your Margaret's maiden name is Demsey

Town Thomas & Towns Thomas is the same person, seems who ever transcribed this wasn't sure is there was a S or not

The other 2 are just another couple to were registered at the same time

I do hope that makes sense

I would say so, that your Margaret was Margaret Demsey.

I think the other two names come up because on each page of the GRO records, there are spaces for two separate marriages to be recorded, so four names should appear together.

I suspect that Mary Ann Ward was the wife of James Hargreaves and probably the reason why Thomas appears as Town or Towns is that the record is unclear and the name could be interpreted either way, so they put both names down (also, it may be that he had an alias, and told the clergyman or registrar this information when he got married).

Margaret was DEMSEY when she married.

That may not be her maiden name.....she could be a widow, divorcee, or married more than once before.

Only the cert. would tell you.

A birth certificate of any children should show her maiden name.
