I've managed to trace my great grandmother who was born in 1890. I have her birth certificate and even a marriage certificate to someone in 1911. How do I find out what happened to her after that. . I cant find anything else about her or her husband. . She had my grandmother in 1908 - but there are no details of the father on my grandmothers birth cert

A couple of things.

You can search for births after the marriage at

http://www.freebmd.org.uk

just by the two surnames: surname of the child (i.e. father's surname) and surname of the mother. After mid-1911, both names are included in records. If they're not too common, you wouldn't have to specify a location. That would give you an idea of her doings after 1911, if she had more children.


Does the marriage certificate not give her age and her father's name? Still can't find her in 1891 or 1901? Oh, duh, you have her birth cert, so you have at least her mother's name. Offer up the names and get somebody else to take a shot at it!

Unfortunately, it's probably unlikely that you will be able to determine who your grandmother's father was.

Was your Grandmother given an unusual 2nd forename?

It is not uncommon for an illegitimate child to be given their father's surname as a forename.

Or as a middle name -- that was the case with my mother's aunt. Somewhere there are Lewises in Nottingham that are some sort of half cousins of mine ...

Her mother - Sarah Rodgers 14/05/1890
Sarah Rodgers married someone called Ernest Edward Nicholls on 15/04/1911 (he was aged 27 at the time)
I've got Sarah Rodgers on the 1901 census with her family.
Its what happened to Sarah Rodgers after 1911 and where she went is what I'm struggling with.
How do I offer this lot up for someone else to assist ?thanks

Researchning forward after 1901 is harder than going backwards I think.

Other than looking for other possible children born to Ernest as Selina has found, you could try the electoral registers starting with the area she married in - youd need to visit the library for this as they are not online.

Ernset could have fought in WW1 so you could try the medal records on the national archive site or pension records on Ancestory to see if he there and Sarah is mentioned.

And finally it would be a trawl on the BMD register to see if you could find a death.

Hello

The only thing we know about her past was that she was given away by her mother Sarah Rodgers when she was very young. Ive only traced Sarah Rodgers due to my grandmothers birth cert - then by luck came across a wedding cert in 1911 for Sarah Rodgers to Ernest Edward Nicholls by spending hours searching marriages and linking up an address(They were living together at the same address where my grandmother was born - 43 Mountpellier Rd Beeston Notts) Other than this dont know anything else. . The 1916 birth looks good - but how would i find out for sure . .

I would buy the 1916 birth cert. If you specify Sarah as mother for the checking point and turns out to be wrong, then the GRO will only charge you 3 pnds (I think).

I think the 1913 boys could be twins. Any reason to think they are not connected?
