I have a Joseph Harman born ca 1808 in Westbury, Wiltshire
His wife Martha was also born ca 1808 in Trawbridge/Trowbridge?, Wiltshire

By 1841 census they were living in St. Clement Danes in Newington - in 1851 census living St. Clement Danes, Westminster.

Are there parish records online for the above areas ; also which is the best way to search the IGI - I have never had any success with this facility.

I will be incommunicado until tomorrow due to raging headache so am retiring early; nar, I wish that it that it was indeed caused by a glass of good red shiraz!

Regards

On the IGI there is a marriage for a JOSEPH HARMOND to a MARTHA SLEIGH on 07 NOV 1836 Saint John The Evangelist, Lambeth, Surrey, England

As Newington came under the Lambeth parish, there's strong possibility that this was their marriage. The fact that the surname is spelt slightly different is no major surprise because back then things were often spelt as they sounded and how the clerk interpreted what he heard.

There are also two baptisms listed for their children:

1. GEORGE HARMAN - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 02 FEB 1852 Saint Clement Danes, Westminster, London, England

2. ARTHUR HARMAN - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 14 JAN 1850 Saint Clement Danes, Westminster, London, England

There is also this baptism listed:

Joseph HARMAN - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 17 OCT 1813 Deverill Longbridge, Wiltshire, England
Father: JOHN HARMEN
Mother: LYDIA CABBEL

Can't find a baptism for Martha - sorry!

Athena –

Thank you for looking on the IGI for me.

I inadvertently misled you re the parish. I have taken another look at the 1841 and the Parish is Westminster and not Newington. The error was due to my misreading the extremely cramped word Westminster as Newington.

I believe that the following is the same family on both the 1841 and 1851 census’s.

1841

Joseph Harman – 33 – Waiter
Martha 33
Joseph 3 – ca 1838
Arthur 1 – ca 1840

1851

Joseph – 42 – Waiter
Martha 42 – Dressmaker
Joseph 13 – ca 1838
Arthur 11 - ca 1840
George 7 - ca 1844
Sarah 5 - ca 1846

Questions –

Do you think that it is more than probable that the above Joseph and Martha are the Jos. Harmond and Martha Sleigh you mentioned that married in Lambeth in 1836?

Now, is it likely that the above Arthur (when aged 10) and George (when aged 8) were the same boys that were Baptised in 1850 and 1852 respectively?

Was there any indication that Joseph and Sarah was baptised?

I would appreciate your further input.
