Problems importing A Gedcom File

Yes, I believe FTM 2008 will do it, but I'd think twice about installing it at the moment - I've heard very bad reports about it.

MFI, yes, I use FTM and I have had the problem once before. It happened when I merged a number of files to produce a gedcom for uploading to GR. If I upload from my master FTM then it seems to work ok.

I believe - but haven't checked it yet as the program disk is still waiting to be installed - that FTM 2008 does allow you to set the anchor name correctly.

Peter, I think the original problem occurs when somebody exports from Genes to a tree program - I'm sure that's what caused it in my case. I have to change the home person every time I upload.

FTM won't let you do that, so whenever I want to upload my tree to Genes I have to export it to PAF first, and change the home person.

It is your tree program, not GR that is causing this.

However some tree programs don't appear to have an option for changing the "Anchor" name and the only way is to ask GR to do it.

They are usually accommodating but you need to make it clear in your message to them what the problem is and that you require their assistance otherwise it just goes into the general query pile of messages.

I'm having same problem and can't get any response from Genes. It is very annoying.

My tree as been like that for months I've e-mailed the GR team numerous times and as yet haven't had any responce. I've given up on using my tree all i do now is answer my mail from other members and look at the board.

Don / Mary

Thanks for the interest.

I am the home person. I carried out the red arrow test as prescribed.

I have know contacted GR.

They have now said they will fix it.

I have had birthdates change and a few other funnies when importing the Gedcom file but nothing like this before.

I think I might stop using GR for my full tree and just use ancestry. GR doesn't cope with my complicated ancestry of Cousins marrying cousins, Uncles marrying neices. Couples marrying twice etc etc.

Are you sure you're the home person in PAF? What happens when you click on the big red arrow in the row of icons at the top of the page?

Don

Don Report 9 Jan 2008 22:55

This happened with mine
Email GR and ask them to make you the home person.
Don.

Not sure what you mean

All the tree detials are correct except when I click on My Family Tree my name does not appear as the tree owner. One of my relatives does and the tree starts on him. Grrr

Clare Report 9 Jan 2008 21:51

Does it open in your Tree Maker as this other person who owns your tree on genes when you open it? Did that make sense? :S If so, you may need to change it on there.

Simon

Simon Report 9 Jan 2008 21:06

Still not right. This is annoying me know

Simon

Simon Report 9 Jan 2008 20:49

Ok I'll try it again

Clare

Clare Report 9 Jan 2008 20:41

Try uploading it again?

I had all my marriages turned around once! (ie husband and wife's name and info switched!) Was very confusing but the next time I uploaded it it sorted itself out.

Also, I have cousins married in my tree, I had to add it on externally and then upload...I think it was then that the marriages got switched, but then again, it sorted itself out and the cousins are still linked properly!

I exported my tree in to the LDS Personal Ancestry file ( As I have done a few time before with no problems)

I had some cousins who married and GR doesn't yet have the functionality to cope.

Export Ok

Made changes

Made sure I was the home person

Saved as a PAF 5 gedcom file

Exported to my hard drive

Imported into GR

Waited 10 mins

Received Email from GR

Viewed my tree to find that I was not the tree holder anymore one of my relatives by distant marriage was.

What has happened?

How can I fix it?

Simon
