would this stand for David or Dafydd on a Welsh census?

It seems it was David. I found this by using Google:-

The Welsh names list is fairly limited and hence repetitive; the Enumerators took advantage of this to abbreviate many entries.

Typical examples are:

Wm (William)

Geo (George)

Hy (Henry)

Dd (David)

Ja (James)

Jo (John)

Jno (Johnathan)

Thos (Thomas)

Archbd (Archibald)

My (Mary)

I would have thought David, because Dafydd should be Ddd. But either way, that is certainly some extreme abbreviation! What is the context? Are any other people abbreviated on the same census?

There are quite a lot of abbreviations on the Welsh census returns.

I thought Dafydd was the Welsh form of David? Obv this doesnt mean that they were known as one or the other depending on the language they were speaking but one may be more common in some areas than the other?! But yes it should be Ddd if it's Dafydd because dd is a single letter in Welsh. Same goes for ll, rh and ch (not that that fits in, but handy to know!)

Oh dear...and I'm supposed to speak Welsh lol and I forgot ff?!

I've found that surnames can also change due to the Welsh adding 'ap' (meaning son of) before surnames. ie ap Rosser would be misheard as Prosser by the English. Again, useful to know! 'merch' was also used at some point in the past (daughter of) although I'm not sure how this would affect surnames really...

Clucky, I have a Robyn line who earlier on were Probyn. I haven´t thought about the possibility that the name could have been ap Robyn, but now I´m wondering.... I´ll add that thought to my notes. Thanks.
