It is indeed like a jigsaw Meercat but the real difference is we are all working blind and with different pictures.

Nobody knows when we start (or even if we have been researching for years) what our own individual tree is going to look like or where the research may take us.

In my own case my family comes from two very different parts of England (oddly my husband's follows a similar pattern). One area is relatively easy for me to do my own research in local records offices while searching on the other side of the country would be impossible to do in such detail.

Once you get beyond census records and if the area you are searching is not well covered by the IGI then you need all the help you can get from online parish clerks, searches on Google or perhaps the help of people who are also hunting for the same branch.

Distant cousins (many met on GR) have shared their ideas with me. Sometimes various theories get passed back and forth while we puzzle something out and sometimes people have access to information which I couldn't have found.

Some of the Hot Matches I've had over the years have been very good and often for unexpected individuals I'd half forgotten about on my tree. These have then opened up new branches for me to explore.

I'm never quite sure when people on here say "I'm doing my own research" what they mean exactly. They use the findings of others in transcriptions of parish records and censuses presumably. Does this mean they only ever add details to their trees if they have been in person to the local records office and seen the original parish record?

I am doing my own research to check whatever I can and fill in gaps where they appear to exist. If a new line suddenly appears which has already been well researched and documented I then do my best to understand as much as I can about the places, occupations and whole lifestyle connected to those people. If possible I try to add to the overall understanding of that family group and share with others who may be interested.

However you like doing this hobby I wish you luck and lots of interesting findings.

Hi Margaret.
I can understand you getting annoyed at people asking to view your tree and not hearing from them again. Most upsetting.

You must do what you are happy with You must have reasons Im sure, for removing your tree.
Just been reading the heated debate on adding other peoples names to trees. which have been opened to them.

Bye.

Margaret,

I've had my Tree (most of it) on GR for several years.
In that time I've made several contacts. A couple have been of great help to me (we've shared information) the others have just wanted to view my Tree - then I never hear from them again.

I'm all for sharing but some people just want to 'take'.

Sorry you feel I was impolite to add to your thread.

I never meant to be impolite just cant understand being on a site if you dont have a tree.

Of course you have to verify info given. Thats why sharing helps you sort things out. Since you have deleted yours you wont get any contacts to verify your findings who have bought certs as proof..
Especially siblings. Non of us can afford to buy all siblings bmds we found on the census but descendants hopefully have.

Margaret,

I don't EXPECT anyone to contact me.

You're right, there is no point in having just one name, especially if that name is 'Living Living'.

I have deleted my Tree.

I have never considered any of my contacts 'stupid', though some of them may have considered me so.

I have NEVER accepted information from another Tree without corroborating that information.

Your reply to my Thread was impolite to say the least.

What is the point of belonging to a site like this if you don't have a tree?

Keep the GR simple and basic with only what is absolutely necessary. Never add sensitive information or details about living people.

That way even if you do decide to allow access to your tree it would be harmless if anyone copied any of it.

If someone is genuinely closely related to me I normally send them heaps of information. I've even posted complete CDs full of files I have gathered over years of research plus copies of documents and photos. None of that is available to anyone who can only see my GR tree.

Here here, i agree with Margaret. Ihave been searching for my real dad, and it wasn't till i read your reply, that i realised no one would be able to find any one, because all we have is living & no names.
However i can also understand what M.Steer is saying, from what i understand she has been plagued with the bandits, and i changed my settings, without realizing nobody will be able to find me ! So yet again i changed them back.
My decision is this, i know my tree is NOT 100%,
& anyone who contacts me is made known of this.
At the end of the day, if someone wants the info that badly, they'll get it whatever the settings are.
Carol.

How do you expect to get anyone to contact you now you have deleted all your names.

I have found plenty of family related and am in contact with them Together we have sorted out family mysteries together. Because we were both told the same family stories We were able to work things out.
I thought the idea was you added your family names so you could be contacted.

No point in having one name or living living you might as well delete your tree altogether.
Or are you just going to contact all of us stupid enough to leave our family trees here without you contributing.

Bob,

I've probably 'shot myself in the foot' but never mind.

I'm down as 'Living Living'.

C'est la vie!
