Laura can you post the earlier censuses as I don't have ancestry. Are there any earlier children?

well, I have beatrice's son William Frederick's Birth cert, that is the only way I know her name! BUT havent been able to find a marriage for Beatrice Burniston and Edward John Smith.

The birth cert shows them living 14 Horsman Street southwark in October 1901. in the 1901 census, (taken early months of 1901) I have found them living at the same address:

1901 England Census
about Edwd Jno Smith
Name: Edwd Jno Smith
Age: 50
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1851
Relation: Head
Spouse's Name: Emily
Gender: Male
Where born: Barningham, Warwickshire, England

Civil Parish: Newington
Ecclesiastical parish: All Souls
County/Island: London
Country: England

Street address: 14 Horsman Street

Occupation: Boot Clicker

Condition as to marriage: married

Education:

Employment status: Own Account

Registration district: St Saviour Southwark
Sub-registration district: St Peter, Walworth
ED, institution, or vessel: 10
Neighbors: View others on page
Household schedule number: 250
Household Members: Name Age
Edwd Jas Smith 8
Edwd Jno Smith 50
Emily Smith 40
Wm Hy Smith 5 - This child died before the birth of my great grandad, I assume he was named for his older brother.

but as you will notice, the name of the wife is wrong! so Its all very confusing. I have had these details posted uo here before. in 1891 Edward is living with a woman called Betsy which seems a much more likely nickname for Beatrice than 'Emily'. in both census the wife was born c1860 Walworth London.

What are your thoughts on that?! Of course I will let you know what the cert turns up, im grateful for your input :)

Unfortunately Eliza was born and died between censuses so that's why she didn't show up. If it were me I would be tempted to buy Eliza's birth certificate after you get Beatrice's.

Can you let us know what the certificate says when it arrives.

Do you have a marriage certificate for either of the twins? Any father's name mentioned?

Hi Nicky,
I hope it doesnt take long! Its driving me mad waiting for it only ordered it on friday so i have a while to go yet, im so impatient when it comes to waiting for certs lol.

Selena, I saw that entry and wondered the same, the thing is I couldnt find an Eliza Burniston on the census either! lord knows what was going on, there is always the possibility that the girls were born in a workhouse, and they're only in the census under their initials as was the case sometimes, I think it is a possibility seeing as they ended up in a home for homeless and destitute girls. this should all be cleared up when the cert arrives though.

Thank you both very muchly for looking, and for your suggestions.

Couldn't find any Burniston marriages in London area; the name seems to occur more frequently in the North.

Wonder if this is a relative?

Births Mar 1852
Burniston Eliza Lambeth 1d 343

Deaths Mar 1855
Burniston Eliza Lambeth 1d 320

Good luck,

I`ve just searched for ages, 1st names only, wildcard searches on surnames, apart from finding them on 1871 ,that you already have, I didn`t find anyone with that surname from Lambeth. lets hope the B/C dosn`t take too long.

yes thats what I thought, I've only ordered Beatrice's cert (she is my GG Grandmother) as they are twins so the info will be the same, it is so frustrating knowing that they must be there somewhere but just cant find them! ggrrrr.....
Thanks for checking anyway Julie,

Laura

I had a look and couldn't see them

If you get their B/C's it will make it easier to find them incase their surname has been mistranscribed

Hello,
I was wondering if anyone could please have a look at the 1861 census for these sisters:

England & Wales, FreeBMD Birth Index: 1837-1983

Name: Ada Burniston
Year of Registration: 1858
Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun
District: Lambeth
County: Greater London, London, Surrey
Volume: 1d
Page: 246

England & Wales, FreeBMD Birth Index: 1837-1983

Name: Beatrice Burniston
Year of Registration: 1858
Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun
District: Lambeth
County: Greater London, London, Surrey
Volume: 1d
Page: 246

I know they must be on there somewhere, unfortunately dont know their parent's names as in the 1871 Census they are both living in Ealing House 'home for little girls' in St Mary's road, Ealing. their surnames have been mistranscribed however, with Ada showing as Bermiuster and Beatrice as Bermmston, the original image does say Burniston though.

sooo... I was hoping someone might have more luck finding them than I did.

Many thanks, Laura xx
