I'm stuck with a line from the marriage of a William Waite and Elizabeth Wardlaw who married by licence at St. Botolphs Bishopgate London 25 September 1828. I've got the church record from the Guild Hall but it has no ages or parents on it. Just wondered if there might be a record of the licence somewhere with perhaps more details. Any ideas welcome.

pre 1837 parish records dont state parents names or ages.

The marriage Licence will probably be held by the local records office / Archives. You could try e-mailing them and see if they have it, or if your near the records office you could pop in and ask.

If the marriage records doesn't give the father's name...very likely at that date, can you find William in the censuses?...this will give where he was born and then you might find christening record on the IGI at familysearch.org

I have been at this point for over 5 years and just hoped that there may be something else.
He was a grocer from Ripon Yorkshire and died straight after having my gt gt grandad, 1831 - what he was doing in London is unknown. She was born in Catterick Yorkshire so he may have met her and followed her to London. She ended up in Yorkshire (have her death cert) but I've been unable to find his burial (to find his age - William Waite is a common name) or her parents -stonemason background at Catterick
I've thought of a romantic story to fill the known criteria BUT would love to know the truth.

i can understand how you want to keep on then.
It would be worth getting the entry from the register from the local records office. It may have their ages. And it will have witnesses too....sometimes useful.
Lovcal records offices will post copies of entries for a couple of pounds.

Did any of them leave a Will?

Even if parents aren't named as such, there may be information like...... to Elizabeth Waite, daughter of my brother Richard......or whatever.... that could help you to build a family for William.

I tried paying York for researching their wills and they found nothing inspite of her being annuit (second husband)
The son was baptised at Ripon church not cathederal but I've checked for burials may times in various local villages at Northallerton archive.
Where else could there be an entry in London appart from the church record I got from the Guild Hall?

It does look as though the only record is at the Guildhall, but I find that very unusual.I expect you have already phoned a few neaby records offices..

Also, I would expect there to be witness names, even if no ages or anything else.

The licence you need is listed on the British Origins site. It was issued by the Faculty Office (of the Archbishop of Canterbury) on 24 Sep 1828.

The originals of these records are held at Lambeth Palace. They've been filmed by the LDS and you can see the film at LDS centres or at the SoG, maybe other places. Since they're national records, the film is less likely to be held at county archives.

You can also get a photoprint by post from British Origins. This will cost whatever it costs to log in to the site now, plus ten quid to order the printout.

It should be informative. These things were legal bonds under which the guarantor could forfeit a huge sum of money if he was later found to have lied under oath.

thanks for all these places to contact. My computer is down at the moment - occasionly using my daughters, hope to be back on line by the end of the week. I'm looking forward to sorting this out.

have you tried IGI for his birth?The marriage is on there

There are several William Waites on the IGI around this time. I tried following them up in the censuses to eliminate those alive and hopefully be left with my William Waite but I was still unsure of my results as several must have died and several not recorded on IGI in the first place.

I've received a copy of the licence thanks to Andrew But it is not very helpful.
Perhaps one day I will work out why a Ripon grocer was in London to marry Elizabeth Wardlaw spinster OTP -the daughter of a stone mason from Catterick Yorkshire
