Adoption wasn't formal until 1927.
The first adoption law in England was the Adoption of Children Act of 1926.
I know this isn't relevant for you, but .... For the location of adoption records in England and Wales (from 1927), Scotland (from 1931) and Northern Ireland see http://www.familyrecords.gov.uk/

Is there any way to find out about adoptions pre 1900 ??
I am researching William Henry Washington, born c1892, who married Annice Chesters in Smallthorn, Staffordshire On the marriage certificate his father is recorded as Timothy.
The only William Henry Washington I have found that matches my criteria is listed as an 'adopted son' in the Howell household - 1901 census.
Any suggestions greatly appreciated
