The census docs are only as accurate as the enumerator heard the names bearing in mind a lot of our ancestors would not read or write. I also have surnames mispelt - and use what I consider to be the family surname and make a note of this in the "notes" area. In one family surname I find an 's' has been added over the years. The other problem also is that the people who transcribed the records were also liable to mis-read the original info. |
