Only one certificate but both names should show on the cert

The GRO index shows 2 entries by the name of the man and one entry in each of the womans surnames

Sometimes these websites log the people by each and every one of their names so that you don't miss them.
There is probably only one actual certificate available.

When I couldn't find an earlier marriage for a widow who married into our family, it turned out that she had been maried TWICE before. This of course didn't show up on her last marriage certificate in 1903. As her birthplace was quite distinctive, I was able to follow her through census and find the marriages to the previous husbands.

Marlene

so are you saying there would be 2 certs for the marriage, one in her married name and one in her maiden name?

second marriages are registered with the former married name and the maiden name of the bride.

Should have the same district and page numbers

Hope this helps

Do you know whereabouts in Kent this happened?

Kim from Sandhurst

Kim from Sandhurst Report 29 Nov 2007 13:26

I have a marriage cert for John Ramsey marrying a Lucy Holt in Kent 1882 entry No. 144

It says on the cert she is a widow and father is John Glover

I cannot find the marriage of Lucy Glover to a Holt anywhere.

but just gone on the Kent BMD website and there is Lucy Holt entry 144 (which is the one I have) and a marriage for Lucy Glover with entry 144 in 1882

surely the marriage could not have been registered twice in 2 different names?

can anyone explain this to me please as I am totally confused
