I have a marriage from the George Bell Marriage Index from the register of St John, Newcastle (1824-1826).

Lancelot Usher married Sarah Hunter on 2 May 1826.

I don't know where I can look next for any details from that marriage, such as occupations, parents names, witnesses names, birthplaces, etc or even if it is possible to do so.

I'd be very grateful if anyone can advise or help.

I gather it is merely an index. Can you see the film of the actual register at your nearest LDS? It is possible then to get a print-out of the actual page. I have a couple, my gt gt grandmothers marriage in 1836 in Manchester Cathedral. Doesnt give all that much info, but at least it says the groom is a minor, with the permission of his mother Mary, and his occupation is Hatter. Plus it gives the witnesses.
The other one is another gt gt grandmother and gt gt grandfather also m 1836. No occupation given for the groom. Just batchelor, bride is spinster.
I have some even older from a church in Staffs. Not a lot of info apart from the date and the brides maiden name.
While it doesnt give parents names you can look at baptisms and try to find the right ones.

It is just the index I have at the moment. There's a great website which I use often which is only for Co Durham records but unfortunately I haven't found anything similar for Northumberland. I'm so used to using the internet for my info that I don't really know what to do or where to go to find the actual parish records.

One of the baptism records I've found on the Co Durham site from the parish records of St Mary & St Cuthbert Anglican Church in Chester le Street, reads:
17 Oct 1802, John Hunter, of Plawsworth, born 23 Aug 1802, 1st son of John Hunter (publican, native of Brancepeth by his wife Hannah nee Summerson (native of Medomsley).

How fantastic it would be if all the records gave as much info!

1802 looks good with rounding of ages in the 1841 census:

Hi Janet,
If you go to the LDS website and look under 'local offices' you'll find your nearest branch. If you call them they'll get any film of any parish register they have (and they have thousands!) sent to that office for you to look at for one or three months, depending on cost. It's only about £8 to get the film for 3 months and then you can go look at it at your leisure!
It's a great service, try it and you might be lucky.

The birth and christening of Lancelot are on the IGI 18 Jul and 21 Nov 1802. His parents were Robert Usher and Sarah.

You should also be aware that a One Name Study has been made of the Ushers :

- copuld save you a lot of time and trouble if it has all been done.
It is always worth Googling a name.

As I have already mentioned on the Record Office section, I am very grateful to you for the extra information you gave me and it will come in very useful.

But my original question was asking where I could go to look up the parish record for further details of the marriage which I had already obtained from the index rather than asking anyone to look anything else up, although as I say, any information at all is very much appreciated.

Basically, I don't know where the marriage records for that parish would be held or how to go about finding them.

When I realised I had probably posted my question in the wrong place, I posted it again on Tips.

Original parish records and copies on microfiche are usually in the central archives for the county you are searching ie Nothumberland.
You may be very lucky that you live near the local central library in and around the area you are looking for.They too may have a microfiche reader and parish records.
I live in Scunthorpe area and they have a very good parish record archive for North Lincolnshire. Lincoln Archives cover the whole of Lincolnshire and is quite comprehensive.
Also some churches have copies of the original parish records. In your case St John in Newcastle.
I woud imagine that the Central archive in Newcastle would have copies.
Google it and email the church or contact the library.
For a small fee they will do a search.
I was fortunate recently to go to the Berkshire Records office for parish records for Wantage and the records for early 1800's did in fact quote the occupation of whom I was looking for. They also mentioned wether they were OTP.
Different clergy did different records in different eras
some were more fully descriptive than others.
I may go up to Newcastle with a friend who is researching her Sharp family in that area so if you havent found what you are looking for Ill take a peak for you.
Not sure when we are off though.

I think the records are in Newcastle records office. Most offices will send you a copy of the record for a pound or so.
It depends very much on the church what info there is at that time.

Google for info of where the oarish records are and address etc.

I've emailed the Northumberland Collections Services at Northumberland Co Council so we'll see what comes from that. If I don't have any luck there, I've now got other options to try, so thanks again.

Carol, if I don't have any luck and you do go up to Newcastle I would be hugely grateful if you could look it up for me. It was very kind of you to offer.

Newcastle Central Library is closed for rebuilding and all the records are now at the Civic Centre,
I am not going upto Newcastle again until March. If you havent had any luck by then i will check it out for you,

Thanks very much for offering Claire. I got a copy of the marriage registration from the Northumberland Collections Services (Woodhorn) and it only cost £1.40.

The record itself, although it didn't give fathers names or occupations, did give a good list of 5 witnesses which has helped a great deal.

Research is ongoing and still exciting!
