AB is able Seaman as alreay stated, he would have started as an Ordinary Seaman and been advanced to AB. Once there he could be promoted further. |

I only know my dad was an Able Seaman in his time in the MS. in WW2. |

My father was in the merchant navy - doing his apprenticeship between 1955 - 1958. One of the examinations he had to take was for a Certificate of Competency as A.B at the port of Liverpool. Does anyone know what A.B. stands for please. |
