Agreed with Gillian save for the fact that if you can give proof that you are blood related there is good chance you can get the "Acte".
Apart from this I have made a very quick search regarding the two names that you gave and cannot find either so before you write to Lyon you must be sure that you have the right name and there are several ways of writing the name that you have given - Jocelin, Joceline, Josselin, Jocelyn .......
I further advise that if you can get more info on the part of Lyon it should help as it is 3rd largest city in France next to Paris and Marselles. The city in 1852 had 3 arrondissements (boroughs) and increased to its present Nine - each of which has its own Marie (Town Hall). These arrondissements can be broken down into a total of about 45 quartiers, so you appreciate that asking for a name with/without a date is about as difficult as asking for, say, Gibbons in London. Your best route would be to find a genealogist in Lyon area - maybe you know where the lady was confirmed (for example) assuming that she was Catholic.

Hi Jean,

In order to obtain her "Acte de naissance" you need to write to Lyon Mairie (Town hall) with what info you have. BMDs in France are not held centrally. Also France strictly follows the 100 yr rule so you will not be able to request actes dated before 1907.

I am currently trying to help a friend try to trace details of her paternal grandmother.She came from Lyon in France,and we have only an approximate year of birth and her name Marie-Louise Joselyn or Joscelyn. Im aware its a long shot but any tips/info or advice would be really welcome.Thank you.
