I've received, today, yet another e-mail from Ancestry equally as vague as the others. I rang them. For reasons which are still not clear, I wasn't able to access certain databases that I should have.

I should now be able to access all their Irish databases and my subscription cancellation has been cancelled.

Hopefully, all is now well!

Yesterday, in a 'fit of pique' I cancelled my Ancestry subscription.

Today I received two separate e-mails from Ancestry.

The first, apparently, in response to my original query regarding what was I actually paying for, explained absolutely nothing.

The second, confirmed my cancellation.

Hi all,

I am currently making the most out of my 14-day free trial and was expecting to be debited the 80 quid at the end, so big thanks for bringing the alternatives to my attention!

My biggest concern is that, having progressed almost all the major family lines back to 1820s births already, Ancestry has very little to offer in terms of parish records to take me further back.

It seems all I would really gain is a year's worth of the ability to 'flesh out' the life-histories of various individuals, maybe add hitherto unknown siblings, prune out 'BMD finds' who don't actually belong and sundry other tasks where there's no real rush.

So, is there any point in me signing up at all?

When my subs were about to run out I responded to their email by ringing their freephone number and haggling with them! I explained that I'd seen that people on GR and FTF were getting a year's subs for £53 - after a bit of thought they agreed to let me have it for the same price.

Not bad, as I'd got my initial subscription free for three months with a copy of FTM (free in the Sunday paper)!

So, do try haggling!

Bee.

Still haven't had a reply from Ancestry, even though they maintain that they will reply the next day of business.

This is only the second time I've ever raised a query with Ancestry and for the second time they have not responded, I think it's time to tell them 'where to shove it'.

I bought FTM in July and used the free month trial and cancelled at the end. I did not get any offer of discount so I have been without since then as I thought £79.99 was too much to pay. Having read the above I have just called the free phone number and told them I was a member but sadly had to cancel as I went away for a few months.
I told them that I had recieved an offer of 20% discount from them but sadly could not take up the offer (ok I fibbed!) she askjed for my email address, typed it in to her PC to confirm previous membership and said she could do the 'offer' of 20% off now.
I gave her the credit card number and got it for £63.96p.
So its well worth being cheeky.... thank you for the advice... hope this helps others.

Thankyou all for your comments.

I've contacted Ancestry and asked them to explain the difference between UK & Ireland and UK.

Will let you know what explanation, if any, they give.

Margaret I had the same problem.
I sent an e-mail explaining that I didn't think it normal to be charged full price for a renewal when I knew that new subscribers were getting 20% off and after several exchanges was offered a subscription with 20% off the £79. I was told to cancel my subscription and was given a telephone number to phone after the date my subscription would have finished.
Living abroad the 08 number wouldn't work. I then thought I'd subscribe for a month and filled in the details but then worked out that the cost was exorbitant. I cancelled and a message flashed onto the screen 'Don't leave yet, we can offer you a year's sub with 20% off.
So, I have my yearly subscription for £63.

I also got no reply when I tried to phone them about them simply taking the money from my account without asking. I would have renewed my membership anyway, but that's not the point. I would have preferred to have been asked.

At least GR aren't the only ones who have people complaining about the poor customer service.

Sounds to me like the UK subscription accesses mainland Britain records and UKI accesses British and Irish Records. But you need to check, first.

you were lucky to get notification. I just had £79.95 taken from my account despite the fact i would not have upgraded. I tried emailing them but had no joy. I don't want to phone them because with my hearing problem I stand the chance of getting somebody with a soft voice who i can't hear and find this frustrating so I have let it ride. i will be more alert next year.

Keith, I shall contact Ancestry, one way or another.

I'm intrigued, though. In your post you mentioned:-

It would seem that you work for Ancestry!
