Hi Caroline,

The entry you mention is the same one i feel is most likely to be "my" Nellie Lockwood.
The difficult part is finding some concrete proof, i've tried many avenues but none get me any nearer a definate answer.
I was also pondering the non named father, my nan was named Margaret Mary Lockwood, so following the theme of using fathers sir name as illegitimate off springs middle name i ran a search for the sir name Mary and was suprised to find an Alfred Mary born 1st quarter of 1897 in Southwark which isn't a million miles from Woolwich a strange co-incidence but i suspect proof will never be forthcoming on this theory. Thanks to everyone for you imput its much appreciated

Hi David
Looking on Free BMD most Lockwoods seem to come from the north (although Nellie herself could have done) but there is a birth March qtr 1897 Greenwich Nellie Marion Lockwood. date seems about right.

Thanks for taking the trouble, Re Wade marraige, don't think this is right line i've already reseached this one, lockwood was her married name, she was a widow before she married Wade

Have found serveral Nellie Lockwoods on 1901 census, particularly 11, Morris Street, Woolwich, aged 4, my hunch is that this could be her, she went on to marry a Frederick Smee, i've made contact through gru with his great nephew but nothing concerete found, though they never had children

Regarding Julies find i will certainly have to look at this one, though according to the nuns who cared for my nan they told her Nellie was 16/17 when she was born

I've hit the famous brick wall, Re Nellie Lockwood, my ggmother, i have no details about her other than the details on my nans birth cert who was born 1913, Nellie and nan never knew each other
Nan was born in Hampstead at the new end hospital, nellie's address was listed as 25 agincourt road Hampstead, this was a womens refuge, run by the Raines Foundation, i've spent much time researching but only find dead ends, have any of you got experience of tracing reletives with such limited information, can you give me any pointers ?, they'd be much appriciated
