The technique used to work for me but stopped working after one of GR's site upgrades. I still use the control+N on other sites (eg-ebay) and it works fine.

When I want to have 2 trees open at once I open mine in IE6 and the other person's in firefox. For some reason, I have never been able to update my own tree when I use the firefox browser (even if it is the only browser open), so I'm pretty much stuck with Internet Explorer.

Margaret sometimes it's easier if you can see 2 trees at the same time. These are various ways of doing this & this thread covers the ways that we know.

At one time "how do I view 2 trees at once?" was coming up weekly so rather than keeping typing the same stuff over & over I did this "how to" thread

I haven't a clue what you are all talking about, pretty sure I am missing out on some useful stuff.

Would somebody like to produce a "handbook"?

What is it that isn't working for people?

The mechanism may depend on what browser you're using.

The process Claire described works in IE -- control-n opens a new window at the same page as the one you're looking at.

In Firefox, control-n (for me) opens a new window at my home page (which is google).

If what she's describing doesn't work, try this.

Go to Messages, and click on My Contacts.

Find the person whose tree you want to view.

Position your mouse arrow over the "View" link for that person's tree, right click, and select "Open in new window".

Then minimize the new window, go back to the list, and right click on whatever tree you want to compare to it -- or, if you don't have your own tree open, right click on the "My family tree" button up top -- and select "Open in new window".

I don't think it should matter what ISP one is using at all (unless it's AOL, maybe, about which I know nothing and which I have no idea why people use!).

It should be just a function of your browser, so if Claire's simpler instructions don't work, try these!

This is a good trick for opening *any* window at all.

I use it when reading threads in the "my threads" list -- I open the one I want to read in a separate window, by Right-Clicking on it, and selecting "Open in New Window".

(Actually, I use Firefox, and I select "Open in New Tab", which I prefer -- new tab in the same window, so it doesn't get lost. I have about 10 windows of different programs, some with multiple tabs, open at a time ...)

When you're done with what you're reading, you just close the window/tab and don't have to worry about navigating back to where you were -- you're still there in the other window/tab.

I also do this when googling -- open each result I want to read in a new window/tab, leaving my search results intact in its own window/tab.

So I just opened my tree by right-clicking on "my family tree" up top -- but the right-click trick doesn't work on the names in the other-trees list, so the way Claire suggested is what ya gotta do for that one.

Now, I also work with two monitors, so I don't have to resize the windows. ;)

If anybody has the extra cash, I can't recommend using two monitors too highly. For my work, it's invaluable, but even for genealogy stuff it means you can be looking at a household in a census on one monitor and searching for matching bmds on the other, etc.

Aol customers may have problems in opening their trees using the above method.

This should work

Opening your own tree & minimize
Now go up to the top of the main screen of GR
Right click on My Family Tree
Now press open as new window
