There's this baptism on IGI - could it be Frederick Ball's wife - Hannah's mother's sister?

Thanks Angela
Leicester FHS had an open day yesterday and i went through it with someone who was a professional researcher and he seemed to think i was along the right lines.
I'm going to try and trace the Ball family back who she is living with as neice on the 1861 census to see how they connect in.
I'm also going to get the parish record for the 1832 wedding of William Tailby and Hannah Hancock to see if that gives me any further info

Hello Paula

Yout theory sounds very plausible & I think you are probably right, although the final verdict can only be down to you! I have a woman in my tree who seems to use two different christian names at different times, with no rhyme or reason!

Have you found a likely candidate for William Tailby on any censuses - in case her mother died & he remarried? Maybe a new wife didn't want to take on the daughter.

I don't think its a misread of the name on the earlier censuses as i've looked at the actual censuses and the writing (for once) is quite clear on all of them and says Hannah

Thanks anyway

Hi,

Not really an opinion, but more a suggestion as to one possible reason for the name change. The Catherines that I have come across in the midlands are sometimes listed in the earlier censuses as "Catton". At a pinch, faced with difficult handwriting, it might just be possible for the enumerator to interpret this as Hannah.

Your main difficulty though will be to explain the two names used almost simultaneously at the date of the two marriages.

Would be grateful of 2nd opinion please

I thought perhaps the couple Hannah is living with in 1841 were her grandparents so have looked throught the marriages of William Tailby (the name of father recorded on Catherine's marriage certificate) and have found the marriage of William Tailby to Hannah Hancock 2 Dec 1832 at St Margarets

Paula

Paula Report 2 Nov 2007 19:49

Still not solved the above but was looking through some details I had noted from the parish records about a year or so ago.

William Cave (who married Catherine Tailby) had a brother called Henry Cave who married Eliza Lewis, on the parish record for Henry's marriage one of the witnesses is a Hannah Tailby.

For the marriage of William and Catherine Henry and his wife are witnesses

Great I thought must be Catherines sister so if i find Hannah on 1861 and before censuses hopefully Catherine will be in the same household.

Not quite what i have found, I have found Hannah on the censuses 1841-1861 and she isn't living with family on any of them:

1861 - Neice age 24 living at 25 Soar Lane with Frederick Ball and his family

1851 - Servant age 15 living in St Margarets (can read street name.) Living with Anthony Mandella

1841 - Age 5 living with William and Jane Hancock- don't know relationship as its not listed on 1841

Now Hannahs age makes her born about 1836. I have Catherine born about 1837 from her age on later censuses.

On the 1861 census Hannah is living at Soar Lane which is the address recorded on Catherines marriage certificate in Sept 1861.

Could Hannah and Catherine be the same person??

I can't find Hannah on any of the censuses after 1861

i can't find a marriage or death for Hannah Tailby in Leicester

Would be grateful for views on this

typically that bit of the certificate is very very faint and difficult to read. It says something Lane

I've been through all the Tailby marriages 1841-1861 on ancestry freebmd (which i know isn't complete so i suppose i could have missed the correct one) to see if I can find a Catharine marrying a Tailby.

The only one i can find is catherine newton who married Thomas Tailby in 1849- based on the later censuses that would make catherine only 12 but i'm keeping an open mind she could have lied about her age on either

I've then found this family on 1851 census living at 6 Moores Yard, St margarets, Leicester with son Thomas aged 4 months. Thomas Snr is a groom and place of birth recorded as Hounslow.

On the 1861 census thomas is living at Dalby Parva hall as a groom (servant). I think his wife must be the catherine that lost for words has found on the 1861 above as she is recorded as married but no husband living in the household.

On the 1871 there is a Catherine Tailby age 45 living in Chelsea London, place of birth leicester. She has children Katherine 13 and Frederick 11. If this is the same Catherine as on the 1851 and 1861 censuses above then that Catherine is eliminated as I already have my Catherine married to William cave on the 1871 census. However i'm not 100% sure if this is the same Catherine as although the name, DOB, place of birth match the childrens place of birth is recorded as St George, Middlesex

As a seperate issue Catherines granddaughter Florence Cave born 1890 married a William Tailby born 1892. What i think i will now is try and trace Williams family back through the censuses to see if there is any connection that way, as like someone said above Tailby isn't that common a name.

Any futher ideas that any one can give will still be appreciated

thanks

Hi Ivy

I've checked the actual images on all the censues after she was married 1871-1901 and on every one her birth place is recorded as Leicester (rather than just Leicestershire)

Paula

Paula Report 27 Oct 2007 00:46

yes i've found william cave he is living with his parents at Duns Lane which is the address on marriage certificate. Her address is very faint and i can't read it, it possibly says Soar Lane so i will try and look for that

Paula,

As Tailby is such an unusual name the census enumerator may have misheard it or copied it up wrongly from his notes. So check all possible spelling variants. Her forename has numerous possibilities too.

Have you found William Cave in the census? Catherine may already have been living with her fiance and be recorded under his name.

Thanks Ivy but have had a look at that and the writing on the census is pretty clear so i don't think it has been mistranscribed.

Back to the drawing board....

In 1871, 81 and 91, Catherine 's birthplace is given only as Leicestershire........it isn't until 1901 that Leicester is specified.
