Well i was hoping for a picture of barge and to build up a picture in my mind of his work and life by finding more about the role of the barge.
He was born in Harkstead which is on the shotley peninsula so i wondered if the barge sailed from pin mill on the river orwell (famous for barges) or the stour which would be nearer his birthplace of harkstead.

Barges could change names. What are you hoping to find out?

I found my great great grandfather on the 1881 census on the barge 'ethel' in london doing the suffolk to london straw run i think. But after researching barges named ethel i found the ethel ada and ethel maud both of which seem to have been built after 1881. So i am confused, I think the barge must have been built in molden, essex baecause thats where the master of the barge comes from. Does any one know anything to help me
