Thanks Heather. Just got his wife's death cert. today and occupation given as farrier again.

Oh yes, certainly it could be that Dr - well, I have read a bit about that in the past and a farrier certainly could do minor vet work so I reckon you have cracked it :)

His son gave his occupation as vetinary surgeon on his marriage cert. Was a bit sceptical about it.Another ancestor gave his occupation as schoolmaster on his marriage cert. then everafter as labourer!!!

'Dr' for the unknown word would certainly be more in line with the later info........particularly when he was a veterinary surgeon.....

Thanks Heather and Reggie for looking.Thought the d at the end might be docter abbreviated as from the dictionary an old meaning of farrier is "one who cures horses' diseases"

Can anyone who has ancestry check 1841 census for the occupation of Jno Long born c. 1796 in Glos living in Compton Greenfield Glos.Looks like horse ??. In other certs. etc he is a vetinery surgeon or farrier. Thanks.
