my gt x4 grandmother was a publican and I found her in a couple of trade directories. It was wonderful finding the name and address of her pub. |

What I was thinking of was listing the person who named themselves as proprietor on whichever census and then trying to track the changing owners/proprietors over the years. |

Yes, they did have to have a licence, but whether they have survived or not is another question - records offices may keep them. |

Nowadays, publicans have to apply to County courts for a licence, but Im not sure when that started or when beer was standardised by Cust and ex. bit before my time. |

Norfolk pubs lists all the old pubs and the landlords - I think quite a few areas have similar sites if you google. |

Does anyone know if there are any online indexes etc about who owned various pubs in Britain? I have a few gamekeepers turned publicans in my tree and was thinking of compiling a list to put on my own site of people who owned pubs. My great-grandfather did at one time and it took us ages to find out just when so I thought it may be a useful thing for anyone else looking for ancestors who owned pubs or hotels. |
